Skyhawks to meet Mavericks in Grand Junction on Saturday/Sunday

4/10/2026 11:00:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis softball team (7-31, 6-22 RMAC) is hitting the road for the first time this April as the Skyhawks soar up the Western Slope to meet the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (18-18, 17-11 RMAC) for a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series this Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 11-12. Doubleheaders are scheduled to start at Noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Search for a Perch
Fort Lewis is searching for its first road win this year, having captured six of its seven wins at home on Aspen Field, with its seventh coming 3-2 in eight innings (Jan. 31) over then No. 14, and current No. 1 nationally ranked Cal State San Marcos (36-3, 18-2 CCAA). In addition, the Skyhawks are looking to bounce back from a 3-1 series loss to New Mexico Highlands University (11-29, 9-19 RMAC) at home last weekend. The lone win was scratched out 8-2 on the back of a complete-game victory in the circle from Izzy Cueva (2-3), who also picked herself up with one of four Skyhawks doubles while going 2-for-3 in the contest. Allieghfaye Abbie was the only other player with two hits in the game, and she matched Carmen Alexander with three runs batted in (RBI).

Mavericks on the Cut Line
Colorado Mesa is also in search of a much-needed bounce-back win after the Mavericks were swept on the road last weekend by Colorado State University Pueblo (27-11, 23-5 RMAC). With the season quickly winding down, the Mavericks find themselves tied for fourth on the RMAC leaderboard, holding what would be the final spot in the conference tournament should the season end today alongside Metropolitan State University of Denver (24-14, 17-11 RMAC) and Black Hills State University (20-19, 17-11 RMAC).

Pitching has been the Mavericks' edge this season, carrying the third-best earned run average (ERA) in the RMAC as a team at 4.17, with a pair of shutouts, 84 combined strikeouts, and an opposing .308 average. Sophia Tassinari (10-9) and Marisa Nehm (7-6) have been the one-two punch in the circle, combining for all but one win and 201.1 of the team's 231.2 innings pitched. In addition, Tassinari carries 49 of the team's total strikeouts (58.3 percent).
