Skyhawks Win Home Opener over Oklahoma Baptist

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College football team broke an 11-game losing streak and won their first home game in two years Saturday afternoon.  The Skyhawks notched a 23-14 win over Oklahoma Baptist University in their home opening game.  The win moves the Skyhawks to a 1-1 record, while OBU drops to 0-3.
 
After nearly an hour lightening delay, the Bison struck first on the score board at 8:46 in the first quarter.  OBU capitalized on a Skyhawk turnover and ran three plays to score a touchdown after Nic Shegog ran back an interception 96 yards.  The Skyhawks were on OBU's three yard line before Shegog's huge interception return.
 
The Skyhawks answered in the second quarter, putting up nine points to take a 9-7 lead at the half.  Dewaun Wesley capped a six play-46 yard drive when he marched in the end zone from one yard out.  A missed extra point attempt put FLC within one of the Bison, 7-6.  Connor Fraser gave Fort Lewis their first lead of the game when he put one through the uprights from 22 yards out at 6:44.
 
With less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Bison scored again to take a 14-9 lead.  OBU recovered a Skyhawk fumble that resulted in a 55-yard pass from Cale Grauer to Eric DeLay.
 
Wesley found the end zone again in the fourth quarter with a two yard run.  The Skyhawks score gave them a 17-14 edge and capped off a 12 play, 73 yard drive.  They added an insurance score from Amery Duncan to seal the win, 23-14. 
 
The Skyhawks carried the ball 58 times for 338 yards.  Dewaun Wesley posted 22 carries for 163 yards and two scores.  Amery Duncan added 108 yards of his own on 20 carries.  The Skyhawks defense held OBU to zero rushing yards on 35 carries.
 
The Skyhawks will open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season next Saturday at New Mexico Highlands.
