Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Trailing 0-2 on the road against New Mexico Highlands University, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team fought back to win their first match of the season Saturday night, 3-2.
"We battled hard to come back from two down and it paid off," said Fort Lewis College head volleyball coach
Kelley Rifilato. "We changed our blocking schemes and forced their hitters to alter there shots. I'm proud of how hard they played tonight."
The Skyhawks (1-9, 1-1 RMAC) dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-21, 25-19, before winning the next three to win the match, 25-16, 25-21 and 15-11.
Ashley Wells hit a solid .388 in the five sets, notching a match high 15 kills on 49 attempts (six errors). Wells also contributed 15 digs and three block assists.
Madi Bickle posted the second most kills for the Skyhawks, as she added 10 kills and only three hitting errors on 24 attempts.
Defensively,
Kristin Stephan led both teams with four blocks, while
Jenna Kinzer notched a match high 24 kills.
Heather Danny added a double-double in the match win with 46 set assists and 10 defensive digs.
The Skyhawks blocking efforts helped contribute to the come-from-behind win. Fort Lewis combined for three team blocks in the first two sets, before adding five blocks in the next three sets and forcing the Cowgirls to commit 18 hitting errors.
The Skyhawks will travel to Colorado Mesa Tuesday night, before heading to Western New Mexico Friday night.
