Men’s Soccer Starts Season with 3-1 Win Over #22 Midwestern State

Box Score

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Facing the 22nd ranked team in the Division II, the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks started their season with a solid 3-1 win over Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

"Midwestern is a strong opponent," said Fort Lewis head men's soccer coach Oige Kennedy.  "They are very strong and a physical team.  This is a tough place to come in and play, given the crowd, the heat and it being a Friday night game under the lights. MSU is a very strong and physical team.  We were able to play our game and keep the position of the game."

Sophomore Yannis Becker (Sittensen, Germany/Gymnasium Oberveland) gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead 22 minutes in the game when he netted a goal from senior Casey Dean (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado HS).  The Skyhawks held a 1-0 lead at halftime before Midwestern State's B.A. Catney tied the game off a corner kick at 50:32.  Elliot Prost (Nevers, France/Jean Marc Blovin) played a part in FLC's game-winning goal when he assisted on Jordan Alexander's (Cambridgeshire, England/Soham Village) score at 60:27.  Fort Lewis added an insurance goal less than three minutes later when the team was credited with a goal.

Sophomore Ryan Shaul (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) recorded six saves and stopped seven shots on goal to start the season 1-0 in the net.

Fort Lewis (1-0, 0-0 RMAC) will travel to Austin, Texas on Sunday to face St. Edward's University at 3:30 p.m. (MDT).
