Skyhawks Fall to #14 CSU-San Bernardino, 3-0

Box Score Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Facing the No. 14th ranked team in the nation in their second match of the season, the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks fell to California State-San Bernardino Friday afternoon, 3-0 (15-25, 19-25, 21-25).

"This morning we just started really slow and made a lot of unforced errors," said Skyhawks head coach Kelley Rifilato. "Slowly but surely we improved over the course of the day.  I felt like at the end we were doing some really good things.  We had a really sound blocking game, but we struggled defensively and serving.  We distributed the ball well and we were unpredictable which made it hard for them to block us.  We moved a lot of people around and they hit a lot of different positions."

The Skyhawks were out-matched in the first set, as they only hit .069 offensively (nine kills, seven errors, 29 attempts) compared to CSU-SB's .706 percent (12 kills, 0 errors, 17 attempts).

Junior Ashley Wells (Grand Junction, Colo./Central HS) was solid offensively for the Skyhawks, as she pounded down nine kills and committed only errors on 26 attempts (.308).  Wells also added six digs and a block. Junior Stephani Sonka (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County HS) chipped in eight kills while senior Kristin Stephan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) notched five.

Junior Ciara Krening (Loveland, Colo./Mountain Pointe HS) guided the Skyhawks offense with 19 set assists.  She also added two kills and two digs.  Three Skyhawks posted at least five or more digs against the Coyotes. Senior Jenna Kinzer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart HS) led the team with 10 defensive digs.

As a team, Fort Lewis hit .129 at the net, accounting for 28 kills on 101 attempts (15 errors).  Playing on their home court, the Coyotes racked up 45 kills on 101 attempts (13 errors) for a .317 hitting percentage.

The Skyhawks will play two more matches tomorrow against Cal State Los Angeles (10 a.m. PDT) and Cal Poly Pomona (2:30 p.m. PDT).
