Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – September 20, 2014 – Seven turnovers by the Fort Lewis College football team resulted in a 40-14 loss at Black Hills State University Saturday afternoon at Lyle Hare Stadium. The Yellow Jackets scored 26 points off of three lost fumbles, an interception and a team safety.
The loss moves the Skyhawks to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Quarterback Ward Anderson scored on the Yellow Jackets first drive of the game for a 7-0 lead with 11:28 left in the first quarter. On the ensuing drive for the Skyhawks, quarterback
Jordan Doyle fumbled on the first play of the drive. Five plays later BHSU converted a 23-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead.
On the kickoff return, Esley Simmons was stripped of the ball and Black Hills State recovered to drive the ball 19 yards into their end zone to take a 17-0 lead.
The Skyhawks next drive resulted in punt, but FLC's defense held the Yellow Jackets to three-and-out and forced BHSU to punt. The Skyhawks drive started on their own 28-yard line. Two plays later,
Andrew Johnson caught a seven yard pass but fumbled the ball that was recovered by BHSU on the FLC 34-yard line. Anderson connected with Anthony Eboreim for a one-play drive, 34-yard touchdown pass.
After one quarter, the Skyhawks trailed 24-0 with the Yellow Jackets scoring 17 points off of FLC turnovers.
With less than three minutes left in the first half, Doyle found Simmons for a seven yard touchdown pass that capped off an 11-play, 60-yard drive for the Skyhawks and put them on the scoreboard, 24-7.
In the Skyhawks second drive of the third quarter, FLC was forced to punt on fourth-and-three. A bad snapped resulted in a 19-yard safety for the Yellow Jackets as they took a 26-7 lead.
Trailing 33-7 in the fourth quarter,
Jordan Gillen caught a 19 yard pass from Doyle to cut the lead down, 33-14.
The Yellow Jackets final score of the game came off a pick six when JJ Kilgore retuned a 70 yard interception into the end zone.
Doyle led the Skyhawks rushing game with 88 net yards on 22 carries.
PJ Hall added 27 yards on nine carries. Johnson caught five passes for a team high 91 yards. His longest catch of the game was 60 yards. Doyle completed 27-of-53 passes for two scores and 256 yards (three interceptions).
Jake Faust recorded a team high 13 tackles (six solo).
Ryan Ross added 11 tackles and a tackle for a loss of one yard.
Sione Folaumoeloa added five tackles, two and a half went for a loss of 10 yards.
Fort Lewis ran 90 plays for 348 yards.
The Skyhawks will open their home season on Sept. 27 against New Mexico Highlands University. Kick off is slated for 12 p.m.
