Box Score DAVIS, Calif. – September 6, 2014 – The Fort Lewis College football team scored 17 points in their season opening game at University of California Davis Saturday night. The Skyhawks fell to their Division I opponent, 52-17.
Fort Lewis nearly held the Aggies scoreless in the first quarter before UCD converted a 21-yard field goal with 29 seconds left in the first period. The Aggies took a 10-0 lead with 9:31 left in the first half before the Skyhawks
Kipp Castanha made a 37-yard field goal to cut the lead 10-3 with 5:56 remaining in the second quarter.
The Aggies scored five more touchdowns before Fort Lewis found the end zone in the fourth quarter. Trailing 45-3, junior quarterback
Jordan Doyle scampered in from 26 yards out to cut the lead to 45-10. Doyle's touchdown run finished the Skyhawks drive of eight plays and 73 yards.
The Aggies answered on the ensuing kickoff by running back the kickoff 89 yards for their seventh touchdown of the game.
Andrew Johnson recorded his first touchdown for the Skyhawks with only 13 seconds remaining in regulation for the final score, 52-17. Johnson's 14 yard touchdown catch capped a 13 play, 62 yard drive.
Doyle competed 27 passes on 45 attempts for 216 yards and one touchdown. He was also the Skyhawks second leading rusher with 15 carries for 31 yards and a rushing touchdown.
PJ Hall recorded 12 carries for 48 yards to lead FLC. Johnson nearly reached the century mark in receiving yards with 97 yards on nine receptions (one touchdown).
Jordan Gillen added three catches for 53 yards.
Jermale Jefferson led all rushers with 123 rushing yards on five carries (two touchdowns). Three of Corey Galindo's six catches were in the end zone (134 receiving yards).
Defensively,
Jake Faust recorded eight tackles.
Theo Chambers and
Ryan Ross added six tackles a piece.
Shane Nelson and
Juan Hull each recorded a sack against the Aggies for a combined total of 17 yards lost. Nelson added four tackles in the game, 2.5 of which went for a loss of 13 yards.
The Skyhawks ran 82 plays for 326 yards against the Aggies and tallied 24 first downs to the Aggies 19 first downs. They led UCD in time of possession with 37:15 but committed 14 penalties for 110 yards.
Fort Lewis will travel to Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Saturday, Sept. 13. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. (MT).
