Women’s Basketball Plays at New Mexico Highlands in Non-Conference Action on Monday

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team will get pretty familiar with New Mexico Highlands over the next month, as the teams will play twice in a couple week span starting this Monday when the Skyhawks will face the Cowgirls in non-conference action starting at 2 p.m. in Las Vegas.

The game was originally scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, but was moved to a 2 p.m. start. This game will count as just a regular season, non-conference contest, while the later meeting on Dec. 7, also in Las Vegas, will count as a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest.

FLC (2-2) is coming off of a solid homestand in which they rolled up an average of 93 points in putting together a pair of commanding victories against Northern New Mexico (92-46) and Southwest (94-46). Jordan Carter paced the offense going for 16.5 points in the two wins, while bringing down 11 rebounds, a block and two steals. Alyssa Yocky added 12 points and led the team in rebounding with 13. Sydeny Candelaria also averaged in double-figures at 10.5 points over the two games and grabbed 12 rebounds. She had five steals, while Yocky led the team with six. MorningRose Tobey and Tanisha Begay added 8.5 points per game and Aubre Fortner tallied 7.0 points.

FLC shot well from the field making 41 percent and took advantage at the foul line making 46-55 (84). The size advantage also helped the Skyhawks on the glass pulling down 101 to just 70 for the opposition. FLC also was plus-30 in the turnover advantage.

So far this season, FLC is averaging 77 points per game and allowing 55 points. The Skyhawks have made 40 percent from the field (106-268) and are making over 72 percent (71-98) from the foul line. Yocky leads the team this season averaging 15.3 points, making 23-40 (58) from the field and averages seven rebounds per contest. In addition she has 10 steals and 13 assists. Carter adds 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, along with two blocks and two steals. Kayla Herrera adds 10.3 points per game and leads the team in assists with 15 and is second in rebounding at 6.8 per game. Candelaria adds 9.8 points and 10 steals, along with 4.5 rebounds per game.

New Mexico Highlands is 2-2 this season and have faced the same teams this year that FLC has played against. They fell to Eastern New Mexico (38-66) and Western New Mexico (34-50) in the same Lone Star/RMAC Conference Challenge that FLC played at in Portales to start the season. The Cowgirls then played Southwest twice in five days, winning the first game in Hobbs (66-49) and then this past Saturday in Las Vegas (67-42).

NMHU averages 51 points and allows 52, while making 37 percent (76-203) from the field. The Cowgirls play mainly a seven-player rotation with seven players averaging 18 minutes per game. Jordyn Lewis leads the team averaging 12.5 points per game and adds 3.5 rebounds. Ari Baca adds 8.7 points and 5.0 rebounds, but missed the most recent game against Southwest. DeAvion Allen leads the team in rebounding at eight per game and adds 7.3 points and 10 steals.

FLC swept both meetings last year with the Skyhawks rolling to the 80-49 win earlier in the year in Las Vegas and then the later meeting in Durango was closer before FLC took the 65-51 win. In the meeting last year in Las Vegas, FLC had eight players score at least six points, with Carter leading the way with 14 points. Herrera added nine points. The Skyhawks won all four quarters and shot 45 percent from the field.

Live video and stats will be available for the game. Following the game at NMHU, FLC will be off the remainder of the Thanksgiving week before opening RMAC play on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Adams State.
