Women’s Basketball to Welcome South Dakota Mines, Black Hills State This Saturday and Sunday

DURANGO, Colo. – The final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games for the 2018 calendar year will take place this weekend when the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team faces South Dakota Mines on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and then on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. against #18 Black Hills State. The games were originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but were moved to accommodate graduation on Saturday.

FLC (4-4, 1-2 RMAC) is 2-0 at home this year picking up victories against Northern New Mexico and University of the Southwest. This past weekend, the Skyhawks rolled to a 88-51 win for the second time this season against New Mexico Highlands and then came back in the second half against CSU-Pueblo before the ThunderWolves claimed the 70-53 win.

FLC averages 74 points and allow 59 points, making 39 percent from the field and holding opponents to a 35 percent clip. Alyssa Yocky continues to lead the team in scoring at 13.5 per game and in rebounds at 7.6 per game, she's also shooting 56 percent (39-70) from the field and 5-10 from three, while going 25-31 (81) at the foul line. Yocky is near the top on the team in steals (14) and in blocks (4). Jordan Carter is second in scoring at 12.9 per game, while making 47-93 (51) from the field and tied for second in rebounds with Kayla Herrera at 6.4. Herrera is third on the team in scoring at 10.8, had hit 11 three-pointers, leads the team in assists with 23 and is tied for the team lead in both steals (15) and blocks (5). She's tied with Carter for the lead in blocks and tied with Sydney Candelaria for the team lead in steals. Candelaria is just short of averaging double-figures in scoring at 9.3 per game, while adding 4.3 rebounds. Alyssa Adams, Tanisha Begay, MorningRose Tobey and Aubre Fortner all average at least four points a game as well.

FLC ranks high in several categories in the RMAC and nationally including second in the RMAC and 27th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.13), first in the RMAC and 77th nationally in assists (122), second in the RMAC and 64th nationally in assists per game (15.3), third in the RMAC and 82nd nationally in defensive rebounds per game (28), third in the RMAC and 28th nationally in field goal percentage defense (34.7), second in the RMAC and 90th nationally in free throws made (118), first in the RMAC and 30th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (16), second in the RMAC and 76th nationally in rebounds (352), first in the RMAC and 33rd nationally in rebounds per game (44), third in the RMAC and 54th nationally in scoring defense (58.8), first in the RMAC and 32nd nationally in scoring margin (15), third in the RMAC and 68th nationally in scoring offense (73.8), first in the RMAC and 54th nationally in steals (87), second in the RMAC and 49th nationally in steals per game (10.9), first in the RMAC and 22nd nationally in three point field goal defense (25.2), first in the RMAC and 18th nationally in turnover margin (6.50), second in the RMAC and 65th nationally in turnovers forced (20), second in the RMAC and 24th nationally in turnovers per game (13.5).

Individually, Herrera is fifth in the RMAC in steals (15) and eighth in the RMAC in steals per game (1.88). Carter is fourth in the RMAC and 89th nationally in field goal percentage (50.5), seventh in the RMAC in both field goals made (47) and offensive rebounds per game (3). Yocky is third in the RMAC in offensive rebounds per game (3), fourth in the RMAC in rebounds per game (7.6), fifth in the RMAC in rebounds (61), seventh in the RMAC in free throws made (25) and ninth in the RMAC in free throw percentage (80.6). Candelaria is fifth in the RMAC in steals (15) and eighth in the RMAC in steals per game (1.88).
First up will be a matchup with South Dakota Mines. Last year the teams played in Rapid City with the Hardrockers claiming the 73-63 victory. Yocky tallied 14 points, going 4-7 from the field. Back in 2016-17, the teams faced each other in Durango with the Skyhawks taking the 76-60 victory. Yocky had a big game piling up 25 points and eight rebounds, going 11-15 from the field. FLC has gone 2-1 against the Hardrockers since South Dakota Mines became a regular RMAC member in 2015.

South Dakota Mines is off to a 2-4 overall start and 0-3 mark in the RMAC, having faced some tough teams to start the season including Sioux Falls (currently 7-1), one-loss Black Hills State and both Dixie State and Westminster. This past weekend at home, the Hardrockers fell just short against Dixie State (70-62) and Westminster (66-61). South Dakota Mines averages 67 points and allows 64 points, making 41 percent from the field and allowing 39 percent.
Taylor Molstad leads the team averaging 10.7 points per game, along with 2.8 rebounds. Anna Haugen tallies 9.7 points and pulls down 7.5 rebounds, while shooting 49 percent from the field (21-43). Sami Steffeck is at 9.2 points per game and Molly McCabe adds 8.5.

The Skyhawks will close the weekend on Sunday against No. 18 Black Hills State. The Yellow Jackets are 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC, suffering their first loss of the season this past weekend in overtime against Westminster. They recovered from that loss to pickup a 89-70 win against Dixie State. Black Hills State was ranked 14th nationally entering play this past weekend and are sixth in the D2SIDA South Central Regional Rankings.

Black Hills State averages 72 points per game and allow 61 points, while making 45 percent from the field and hold the opposition to 37 percent. Four players average in double-figures with Morgan Ham leading the way at 13.7 per game, making 45 percent from the field and pulls down 6.4 rebounds. Julia Seamans is right behind at 13.6 per game, making 45 percent from the field and has 12 steals. Lyndzi Rich has 10.6 points and Remi Wientjes is a 10.5 per game, with Rich shooting 57 percent from the field.

FLC and Black Hills faced each other twice last year, both occurring in Spearfish. The first during the regular season in which the Yellow Jackets took the 53-48 victory and then later in the first round of the RMAC Tournament pulling out the 59-56 win. During the most recent meeting, Herrera scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds. In the regular season meeting Herrera tallied eight points and Kelsey Wainright added four points. In that last meeting in Durango during the 2016-17 season, Black Hills State escaped with a 53-52 victory. The last win for FLC in the series came during the 2012-13 season when the Skyhawks posted an 80-71 victory in Spearfish. The Yellow Jackets have won the past seven meetings in the series.

A look around the RMAC has Colorado Mesa, Westminster, Colorado Christian and CSU-Pueblo all tied for first with 3-0 conference records. Black Hills State, MSU Denver and UC-Colorado Springs are all tied for fifth with 2-1 marks. Dixie State, Regis, Western Colorado, Fort Lewis, New Mexico Highlands and Adams State are all tied for eighth with 1-2 marks. Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota Mines and Chadron State are all tied for 14th with 0-3 conference marks.
