DURANGO, Colo. – Following four straight games of non-conference action, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play this Friday and Sunday when they host Black Hills State and Regis at Dirks Field.
FLC (1-2-1) will play Black Hills State at 1 p.m. on Friday and then will face Regis on Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
The last three games have been strong showings for the Skyhawks, as they tied Midwestern State, defeated Eastern New Mexico and stayed close right until the very end against West Texas A&M.
As a team so far this season, FLC has generated 53 shots, while opponents have 63 shots. Of the total shots, 23 have landed on goal for the Skyhawks, while 33 have landed on net for opponents. Individually, Renee Terrell leads the offense with two goals and four total points. Courtney Wamboldt is second with three points (a goal and an assist), while Skylar Byrnes has the other goal on the team and Chloe Chapman has an assist. Five players have at least five shots, led by Terrell's nine. Charlie Kaiser has seven, Britney Johnson and Emma Patron have six apiece and Wamboldt adds five. Wamboldt has landed four on goal to lead the team, while Terrell, Kaiser and Johnson have three shots on goal each. Three players have logged over 360 minutes so far with Katie Smith back on defense leading the way with 370 minutes. Goalie Birtt Blomso has 362 minutes and midfielder Kaiser adds 361 minutes. Blomso is coming off of a big game in net in which she saved 10 shots against the Lady Buffs. On the year she has 24 saves and a 1.99 goals against average.
As a team, FLC is third in the RMAC and 65th nationally in saves per game (6.25). Individually, Wamboldt is second in the RMAC and 45th nationally in game-winning goals (1), Blomso is third in the RMAC and 36th nationally in total saves, third in the RMAC and 60th nationally in saves per game (6.00) and seventh in the RMAC and 59th nationally in goalie minutes played. Terrell is sixth in the RMAC in total goals and 10th in total points. Chapman and Wamboldt are tied for 10th in the RMAC in total assists.
First up will be a meeting with Black Hills State. Last year, FLC traveled to Spearfish and recorded the 4-1 victory. Patron had a pair of goals in that game, while Meredith Curran and Alicia Sanchez added on apiece. FLC held a 16-9 shots advantage, including 9-5 on goal. The Skyhawks also took the last meeting in Durango back in 2016, 3-0.
BHSU is 0-5 on the season, having played every game away from Spearfish. They have played Minot State (0-6), Northern State (0-2), Sioux Falls (0-4), University of Mary (3-5) and MSU Billings (0-3). Mikayla Hernandez has had all the offense for the Yellow Jackets, as she has all three goals. Rose Miller has two assists. Dx-Rae Jara and Zoe Baldwin have split time in the net with Jara logging 210 minutes and an 0-2 record with 13 saves and eight goals against. Baldwin has 239 minutes with 13 saves and 12 goals against, along with an 0-3 record.
To close the weekend on Sunday, FLC will battle Regis. These two teams squared off twice last year, with the Skyhawks nearly winning the regular season game in Durango, before falling just short, 0-1. Regis then took the tournament game in Denver, 6-1. In the matchup in Durango, Regis scored the only goal in the 74th minute. Regis held a 14-5 shots advantage, with a 9-0 edge on goal. The 2016 meeting also was a close one in Denver with Regis claiming the 1-0 victory.
Regis is 1-1-2 on the season, having played a pair of 0-0 ties against CSU-Chico and St. Edward's. They also fell in a close 0-1 battle to San Francisco State and defeated Angelo State, 2-0. The Angelo State game was played in Denver.
They will face Adams State on Friday in Alamosa before traveling to Durango. Keegan Storlie, Cat Devitt and Emily Ramos all lead the team with two points, as Storlie and Devitt have the goals and Ramos has both assists. In net, Julia Coombs has started all four games, tallying 17 saves to just one goal allowed.
