FLAGSTAFF, Ariz
. – The Fort Lewis College men's cross-country team was back in action on Saturday, kicking off the 2021 season at the George Kyte Classic hosted by Northern Arizona University.

The Skyhawks earned an impressive third-place finish, coming in behind a pair of NCAA Division I opponents in No. 1 Northern Arizona University and Grand Canyon University. FLC's third-place mark came in ahead of the University of Arizona (fourth-place) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (fifth-place) which ranks fifth in the NAIA.

"This was a really good day for us. We packed up and ran as a team for a 1:00 spread and beat some quality teams from both the NCAA Division I ranks and the NAIA ranks," said head men's cross country coach Joshua Coon.

Senior Steven Nez was the team's top finisher, earning a 16th place finish with a time of 24:16.8. Sophomore Ethan Bartlett was hot on his heels, crossing the line in 17th place with a time of 24:20.3. Rounding out the top-five for the FLC squad was junior Ricardo Trejo (24:48.4, 25th), senior Cody Speece (25:15.7, 31st), and sophomore Max Robinson (25:17.6, 33rd)

"Overall, this is a really positive first step. We know we have a lot of work to do, but we know the caliber of people we have on this team," noted Coon.

The team will be back in action on Saturday, September 11 when they head to Adams State University for the Joe Vigil Invitational.
