Paschke's PK propels Skyhawks to third-straight win

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team extended its win streak to three straight on Sunday afternoon, earning a 1-0 shutout over Adams State University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

It was the third shutout of the season for a Skyhawks squad that improves to 4-6-1 overall and 3-2 in league play. Fort Lewis holds a 4-1-1 record at home and is outscoring the opposition 9-3 on Dirks Field. The loss moves Adams State to 2-7 on the season and 1-4 in the RMAC.

"It's nice to have a bit of momentum and growth happening as we look ahead to a pair of challenging games this next weekend," said head coach Damian Clarke. "I'm excited to keep growing and learning with this team."

Fort Lewis was held shotless in the opening 45 minutes of play but responded with eight in the second half to stick with the Grizzlies. The Skyhawks ended the match with six shots on target to just two for the opposition. Sophomores Julia Johnson and McKenna Ford led the team with two shots apiece, each placing one on target. Senior Hannah Paschke placed one shot on goal in the win, and she made it count on the penalty kick opportunity for her second goal of the season. The Skyhawks had six players play all 90 minutes in the win, including freshmen Cecilia Marlowe, Rachel Peebles, and Dannon Yake. Junior Katie Dunbabin earned the win between the pipes, making a pair of saves in 45 minutes of action before being relieved for sophomore Riley Bravin who closed out the match.

"We knew the legs would be a bit of an issue today, and Adams didn't play on Friday, so we had an extra 90 minutes of work this weekend," explained Clarke. "That's where you could see the difference in the first half of play."

Adams State saw the match's first scoring opportunity in the 24th minute as Colette Tena collected a short pass on a free-kick opportunity just outside of the box. Despite traffic in and around Dunbabin in goal, the junior keeper remained focused and earned her first save of the afternoon.

The Grizzlies continued to control the pace of play throughout the following portion of the half and sent another shot on target in the 36th minute. Again, it was Colette who took advantage of favorable field position on a free kick. The forward sent a similarly placed ball on target into the lap of Dunbabin to corralled another save. Despite the pressure exuded from the visiting squad, the score held at zeros as time expired in the half.

The Skyhawks responded out of the break, looking like a team that was ready to fight for a lead out of the gate. "The message at the half was simple, win some balls in the midfield and play out of the pressure quickly," said Clarke.

Sophomore Elizabeth David put a shot on target in the 49th minute, taking advantage of a yellow card and lining up a free kick just inside the midfield line. David, who scored on a nearly identical opportunity two matches ago, was not so lucky this time as the shot found the arms of the awaiting keeper to hold it scoreless.

Fort Lewis went on to find a pair of on-target shots in the 61st and 63rd minutes to slide the momentum in favor of the home team. First, it was Barela who pushed a bouncing ball on goal and into the arms of the keeper. Johnson followed with a shot just two minutes later, settling a pass from Barela on the left side of the box. The sophomore took a touch and crossed one low right, but the keeper got just enough on it the deflect the ball wide.

The scoreless trend would come to an eventual end in the 64th minute, though. Paschke drew a foul inside the box off an over-the-shoulder pass from Johnson which led Adams State's Aly Miles to trip the Denver native and bring on a penalty kick opportunity. Paschke made the most of her moment, drilling a goal top right for the 1-0 home advantage.

"Our play for a period of time in the second half led to that penalty kick opportunity," noted Clarke. "We started getting the outside banks involved, and Julia was dangerous for 10 minutes which resulted in Paschke winning a PK and scoring it herself."

The Grizzlies did their best to mount a comeback, drawing from the bench to get fresh legs throughout the final 20 minutes of play. The Skyhawks' defense remained poised considering the changes occurring around them and held the visitors without a shot through the final 19 minutes of play to earn the 1-0 shutout.

Fort Lewis (4-6-1, 3-2-0 RMAC) is back on the road next week to face Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College. The team will kick off road RMAC play on Friday at 7:00 p.m. from Community Hospital Unity Field in Grand Junction. Colorado Mesa sits 4-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the league after dropping a hard-fought 1-0 match to No. 15 Colorado School of Mines on Friday.
