Mavericks hold Skyhawks scoreless in road tilt

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Play in its first road match since mid-September, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team was held scoreless in a 2-0 final versus Colorado Mesa University on Community Hospital Unity Field.

Fort Lewis falls to 4-7-1 overall with an even 3-3 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Mesa lifts to 5-6-1 on the year and 3-3 in the league.

"We didn't perform well tonight. We had a lack of energy for too long against a really good Mesa team," said head coach Damian Clarke. "The coaches probably need to take some blame as we left that we could have prepared the team a bit better for this match. We will be ready to put on a better performance on Sunday."

The Mavericks outshot the Skyhawks 22-8 for the match, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Fort Lewis held the edge in corner kick opportunities, coming away with six to Mesa's four. Sophomore Elizabeth David led the team with three shots, all of which were on target. Sophomore McKenna Ford followed with two goals in 90 minutes of play. Sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum played all 90 minutes at goal and earned five saves in the effort.

The Mavericks dominated the paces of play in the opening minutes, picking up three shots off-target before Rosenbaum was forced to make her first save in the 14th minute. It came as no surprise that the league's leading scorer, Lila Dere, registered the game's first shot on goal. Dere's chance came from just outside the box and took a pair of bounces before being corralled by the Fort Lewis keeper.

Rosenbaum was forced to her left eight minutes later, earning her second save of the match on a left-footed shot from 10 yards out. Mesa wouldn't be held scoreless much longer though, getting the go-ahead in the 23rd minute off the foot of Ally Wachtel. The Mavericks earned favorable field position on a corner kick chance, and an attempted clear for the Skyhawks' defense found Wachtel in prime position for a chip to the right of a rushing Rosenbaum.

Fort Lewis had its first shot of the match in the 34th minute when Barela unloaded on one from 25 yards out, but stout defensive effort resulted in a block as the ball dribbled to the awaiting keeper. Freshman Cecilia Marlowe earned her first shot of the night minutes later, but the attempt tailed wide left to hold the score at 1-0. Despite a late shift in momentum, the Skyhawks went into the break trailing by a goal.

Wasting no time doubling up the lead, Mesa found the 2-0 advantage just four minutes into the second half. The Skyhawks were forced to work on defense, shadowing a trio of Mesa weapons as passes bordered the box. Haley Klasner finally pulled the trigger on a pass from Kylie Wells and sent the score low left. Fort Lewis had its first shot on goal in the 59th minute when freshman Anna Tucker crossed it to Ford in the box. Ford battled the charging keeper but sent the shot just right.

Fort Lewis saw an advantage in the final five minutes of play when Mesa's Michaela Dangler received a red card on a slide tackle on David. Sophomore Aubrey Swindle made the most of the late man-up opportunity, bringing the wall to the top of the box with a trio of Mavericks on her tail. The sophomore sent a cross toward a Ford, but the timing wasn't there for the visitors to register a shot. The Skyhawks' last chance came with 21 seconds to go and a set piece chance found the head of Ford whose attempt drifted wide and time expired.

Up Next
Fort Lewis (4-7-1, 3-3 RMAC) will turn around for a Sunday contest versus Westminster College in Salt Lake City. The Skyhawks are 1-5-2 all-time against the Griffins and played to a double overtime scoreless tie in last season's meeting.
