Skyhawks challenge but fall to CCU, 3-1

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – A balanced attack for the Colorado Christian University Cougars resulted in a 3-1 win over the Fort Lewis College volleyball team in Friday night Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. CCU improves to 14-10 overall and 9-6 in league play while Fort Lewis falls to 8-13, 6-9 RMAC.

"We fought to get momentum tonight, but it kept slipping away once we had it," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We served aggressively and that put a lot of pressure on CCU, but we couldn't capitalize offensively. We keep showing signs of resilience and that's what we will push for."

Fort Lewis hit .117 for the match compared to a .254 efficiency for CCU. The Skyhawks out-blocked and out-served the Cougars with seven of each on the night. Senior Rylee Johnson led the lead with 11 kills and five blocks, followed by junior Lauren Shea at 10 kills to go along with eight digs. Senior Kamryn Lopez picked up 14 digs to lead the team. Sophomore Natalia Lambos dished out 39 assists and three kills in the effort.

Set One (24-26)
The teams matched blow for blow as the match got underway, knotting up a handful of times before a 4-0 run had the Skyhawks ahead 12-9. CCU turned it on with a run of its own, picking up a pair of service aces to see a 14-12 lead. Neither side led by more than two points from there, but the Cougars held the advantage with a kill to see set point. A ball handling error, followed by an ace from JJ Curry tied it at 24-24 to send the set to extras. CCU maintained composure and collected the final two points of the set to go ahead 1-0 for the match.

Set Two (25-22)
It was a close opener to the set with five tied scores before a five-point run had Fort Lewis ahead 15-11. Down but never out, the Cougars bit back with a run to take a 16-15 advantage before a Johnson kill off the block tied it again. Hobie took control of the following pair of points, finding a seam in the block to keep the score knotted as the teams approached the 20-point mark. The sophomore continued to pad her stat line with back-to-back aces to see a 22-20 lead which forced a CCU timeout. The Cougars rattled off a pair, but a line shot from sophomore Melanie Smith sealed the set in a 25-22 score.

Set Three (12-25)
The Cougars responded immediately after dropping the third set by jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Fort Lewis got its middles involved in the ensuing points as the teams traded points for a 10-6 score. CCU mimicked the production from the middle and put one away for a 13-7 lead and a Fort Lewis timeout. The lead remained in the hands of the home team with a touch called off the block to make it 18-9. The Skyhawks couldn't find offensive rhythm in the later portion of the set with a handful of errors handing the Cougars a 25-12 win. Fort Lewis hit at a -.083 clip for the set compared to a .448 percentage on the other side of the net.

Set Four (20-25)
Bouncing back from a tough loss in the third, the Skyhawks took an early 4-3 lead off a kill from Shea. The Cougars rallied to go ahead 9-4 before a kill from Butler allowed for a side out. The lead remained with the home team as the set neared its end, but Fort Lewis wouldn't go down without a fight. The blue and gold rattled off six points, capped off by a block from Johnson and Lambos, to tie it at 18 all. That was as close as it would get, though, as three in a row from the pin closed out the match, 25-20.
