Late PK downs Skyhawks in road finale

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A go-ahead goal in the 87th minute stood as the game-winner in a narrow 2-1 loss for the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team on Sunday at Westminster College's Dumke Field.

The loss moves Fort Lewis to 4-8-1 overall and 3-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Westminster improves to 6-4-3, 4-2-1 RMAC.

The Griffins outshot the Skyhawks 28-1 for the match, including a 10-1 in shots on target. The Skyhawks' lone shot came from senior Hannah Paschke who made the most of her moment, netting her team-best third goal of the season. Senior Madyson Barela picked up an assist in the effort, her first of the season and second of her Fort Lewis career. Senior Katie Dunbabin and sophomore Riley Bravin combined for seven saves for the match.

"The statistics don't tell the full story of today's match," said head coach Damian Clarke. "The girls fought hard to stay in this game, and I think Westminster is the best attacking team we have seen this season."

Despite the disparity in the shots category, the Skyhawks were the first to strike. The opportunity came on a set-piece chance in the 18th minute. Barela lined up to send the ball in play and found the head of Paschke who directed it low right from 10 yards out for a 1-0 advantage. Westminster found the equalizer on the ensuing possession, tying the match 1-1 just 30 seconds later.

The remainder of the half was dominated by the Griffins who sent an onslaught of shots Dunbabin's way. The senior keeper managed to keep things tied and earned her fifth save of the half in the 43rd minute on a rolling ball from 20 yards out to send the teams into the break at a deadlock.

Westminster remained in control out of the break, testing the new Fort Lewis keeper immediately with a trio of shots in the opening 15 minutes. While the shots continued to rack up for the home squad, Fort Lewis' defensive efforts impressed and held things at 1-1 as the minutes ticked away.

Just when it appeared the match would end in a tie, the Griffins caught a break with a penalty kick opportunity with four minutes to play. Bravin made a move to her right, and Westminster's Cassidy Orr went left to make it a 2-1 game. The home squad tallied one more shot for good measure as the contest ended in a 2-1 final.

Fort Lewis will be on the road next Friday to face No. 10 Colorado School of Mines in Golden. The Orediggers are 9-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the RMAC and are coming off a sweep this weekend against Westminster (1-0) and Colorado Christian (3-0).
