Lopez and Hobie headline home sweep of UCCS

DURANGO, Colo. – Explosive offense and steady defense is a recipe for success, and the Fort Lewis College volleyball team got a taste of that tonight. A monstrous 19-kill performance from sophomore Alexis Hobie, complimented by a 24-dig night from senior Kamryn Lopez, led the Skyhawks to a key sweep over UCCS to wrap up the weekend.

"I'm so proud of the effort from all of our players tonight, but Alexis and Kamryn had a special night," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "Alexis is the type of player that wants to have fun on the court, and you could see that in the way she played tonight. She stepped into her leadership role, and I'm so proud. The same can be said of Kamryn who has earned her role and outworks everybody to help the team succeed."

Fort Lewis improves to 6-10 overall and 4-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while UCCS slips to 8-10, 3-7 RMAC. The win moves the Skyhawks ahead of the Mountain Lions in league standings, placing Fort Lewis eighth in the field of 15 with eight conference matches remaining.

The Skyhawks edged out the Mountain Lions in most statistical categories, including hitting efficiency where the home squad boasted a .185 mark to just .040 for the visitors. Fort Lewis was fueled by eight blocks and a whopping 58 digs compared to 49 for their foe.

Hobie's 19 kills led all players, and she was followed by junior Lauren Shea who contributed six on the night. Shea's night was not defined solely by offense, though. The right side was active on defense with 10 digs and dished out a season-high four assists to mark a well-rounded outing. "Lauren is a steady force, and it's not typical to have an opposite play all six rotations," recognized Tarnauskaite. "Everything shows in her play and her steadiness on the court. She's learning how to take risks and trust her ability, and it shows."

The primary setter this evening was sophomore Natalia Lambos who piled up 28 assists to go along with seven digs and a pair of blocks. Sophomore Ruthie Ridderhoff returned to the hardwood and put away a season-high six blocks. "Blocking has always been Ruthie's strength, and she didn't miss a beat tonight which proved her readiness and trust in herself," said Tarnauskaite.

Set One (25-11)
The evening got off to a rocking start with a scoring run off the serve of sophomore JJ Curry pushing the team ahead 5-0. UCCS managed to side out with a kill on the right side, but the Skyhawks bit right back with a run to get ahead 11-1. The scoring run featured three kills from Hobie to go along with a slew of Mountain Lion miscues. Hobie got the scoring started with a slice on the pin, followed by a Ridderhoff kill to extend the lead to 14-2. The Mountain Lions gained a little momentum late in the set, pushing the score to 21-11 with a service ace. Fort Lewis buckled down and scored the set's final four points to take a commanding set one.

Set Two (26-24)
The teams kept it close in the early goings, swapping the lead a handful of times before the Skyhawks found a two-point cushion on an attacking error at 12-10. Fort Lewis maintained the lead as the score shifted to 17-14, but the Mountain Lions struck with a 5-0 run to see their largest lead of the match. Undeterred, the Skyhawks responded with a 6-1 scoring run to make it a 23-20 score. Hobie was nearly automatic in the set and tacked on three kills through the slew of points. The set ended up tying at 23's and 24's, but a kill from Shea had the team at set point before an error closed it out.

Set Three (25-20)
UCCS went ahead 6-3, its largest lead of the night, but the scoring run trend persisted as Fort Lewis got ahead 11-8. The Mountain Lions had a side out with a kill from the middle, but the Skyhawks erupted to an 18-9 lead with an ace from Shea and a shutdown block by senior Rylee Johnson. Just when it looked like the set was out of reach, UCCS found some spark and tied things at 19-19. The Skyhawks remained calm and sided out with a Hobie kill to the deep corner to go ahead 20-19. The Fort Lewis scoring didn't stop there as aces off the hand of Lopez brought on set point Skyhawks. UCCS fended off the match end momentarily with a cross-court kill, but a service error took the wind out of the sails in a 25-20 final score.

Up Next
Fort Lewis (6-10, 4-6 RMAC) will be on the road next week to face South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State University for a Friday/Saturday slate.

"Tonight's match came at the right time to boost our belief in ourselves as we head into the back half of league play. We train like a championship team, and it will be about continuing to execute at a high level going forward," ended Tarnauskaite.
