Fort Lewis College Softball Ends WTAMU Invite With Loss to Lions

CANYON, Texas – The Fort Lewis College softball team wrapped up the nonconference portion of its schedule on Sunday, dropping a 9-0 decision to Texas A&M-Commerce to close out the WTAMU Invitational.

The Lions capitalized on an early home run to take a 2-0 lead before a pop out could get the Skyhawks out of trouble. The big inning came in the second, putting up four runs on four hits to extend the lead to 6-0. The Skyhawks looked to have something brewing in the bottom half of the inning when Sydney Stewart led off with an outfield single. Jadyn Gilley and Cat Rodman responded with back-to-back singles to the grass to load the bases. Commerce buckled down defensively, recording three-straight outs to hold Fort Lewis scoreless.

Through the following innings the Lions extended the lead to 9-0 to push things to run-rule territory. Fort Lewis, facing its final outs, found a pair of hits in the bottom of the fifth to place a pair on the bags with one out. The Commerce pitcher induced a pair of fly-outs to strand the runners on base in a 9-0 final.

Fort Lewis (0-9) will look ahead to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action with a four-game road stand with Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colorado. The teams faced in four games last season with the Cougars running away with three wins.
