Skyhawks Drop RMAC Openers to Cougars

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Despite a 10-inning marathon in game two, the Fort Lewis College softball team dropped both games to Colorado Christian University in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season-opener. Fort Lewis falls to 0-11 overall and 0-2 in the league while CCU improves to 12-4, 2-0 RMAC.

Game One: Colorado Christian 15, Fort Lewis 0
The Cougars picked up the first hit of the ball game in the bottom of the first when the leadoff batter singled up the middle, but starting pitcher Hailie Mann induced a fly-out to leave the runner stranded. Fort Lewis earned its first hit of the afternoon with a Sydney Stewart single through the left side, putting a runner on base with nobody out. CCU's defense worked out of the jam, executing a double play to clear the bases.

The bottom of the second inning saw the Cougars doing their most damage, putting up three runs on three hits and one fielding error to go ahead 3-0 after two. The home squad found its groove offensively from there, belting a three-run shot over the fence in left-center to double up the lead after three innings of work. Fort Lewis looked to have something brewing in the top of the fourth with a leadoff walk and a Madyson Devers single putting two on with one out. The Cougars prevailed on defense yet again, inducing a pop-up and fielder's choice to get out of the inning unscathed.

The long ball continued to benefit the Cougars, this time with a three-run shot to left field and a two-run dinger to right field to extend the lead to 11-0 with nobody out. The runs continued to pour on with a sac fly, triple, and throwing error leading to a 15-0 score after four. Cat Rodman picked up a hit and moved to second on a stolen base, putting a runner in scoring position with one gone in the top of the fifth. Breanna Baca advanced Rodman to third after putting the ball in play after a long at-bat, but a groundout ended the game in a 15-0 final score.

Game Two: Colorado Christian 6, Fort Lewis 4
Momentum from the run-rule win carried over into the start of game two with the Cougars getting the leadoff on courtesy of a triple. The runner was brought home when the following batter doubled to the gap in right-center. Starting pitcher Amiee Shanks worked out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts to hold the deficit at 1-0 after one inning of work. The Skyhawks broke the scoreless streak in the third inning, kicked off by a sac bunt from Alex Tenorio to move Jaden Blaise Redus to third base. Katie Pippel executed a sac fly to deep left field, scoring Redus from third to knot the score at 1-1.

CCU threatened again in the third inning, getting a leadoff double to see a runner in scoring position. The runner would advance to third on a groundout, and the Cougars worked a walk in the following at-bat to see runners on the corners. Shanks picked up a pair of swinging strikeouts to leave the runners stranded at the score remained 1-1 after three.

The Fort Lewis offense continued to improve as the game progressed with back-to-back hits from Stewart and Rodman putting a pair aboard. Jadyn Gilley followed with a hit by pitch to load them up with nobody down. Hannah Rutherford brought Stewart home with her second walk of the outing as the score shifted to 2-1 in favor of the Skyhawks. Sloan Shotton followed with another free pass, this time via a hit by pitch, to bring Rodman home. The fourth run of the game came on a Redus sac fly to score Gilley with the score at 4-1. The Cougars made a pitching change and picked up two strikeouts to end the inning with the Skyhawks ahead by three runs.

CCU countered with back-to-back doubles to bring FLC's lead to just one run with two down. A single through the right side brought home the tying run before a play at the plate got the Skyhawks out of the inning knotted at 4-4. The teams remained deadlocked into the seventh inning with defense eliminating opportunities for either side. Fort Lewis found a runner aboard with a Devers single in the seventh, but the Cougars worked out of the jam with infield outs to move the game into the bottom of the frame. CCU worked a two-out hit by pitch, followed by a single to find runners on the corners. Mann worked her way out of the pressure situation with a fly-out to left field, moving the game to extra innings.

Fort Lewis went down quietly in the top of the eighth, bring CCU to the plate with the hopes of ending the game. The Cougars began the home half of the inning efficiently, dropping in a leadoff single to put the go ahead on base. The Skyhawks picked up out number one with a catch in centerfield, but the home team countered with a double to put two in scoring position. The Skyhawks picked up the second out on an infield fly just behind second base and followed with a snag in center field to move the game into the ninth.

Both sides went down quietly in the ninth frame, moving things along to the 10th. Fort Lewis got it cooking in the top of the 10th, tallying two-straight singles from Devers and Stewart to see two on with nobody down. Rodman got aboard next, taking advantage of an infield error to load them up for the Skyhawks. CCU defense picked up two quick outs and notched the third on a looking strikeout to head to the bottom of the inning. The Cougars found the long ball yet again, sending a walk off homer over the fence in center for the 6-4 victory.
