Skyhawks Falter Against Red-Hot Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team ran into a formidable foe on Saturday afternoon, dropping the series opening doubleheader to Colorado Mesa University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

Game One: Colorado Mesa 8, Fort Lewis 1
Mesa struck early, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning behind two hits and a fielding error. The Skyhawks looked to be in good position in the following frame, getting two runners aboard courtesy of a walk and error, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat while stranding a pair in scoring position.

The teams were quiet in the ensuing innings before an RBI single in the fourth had the Mavericks ahead 3-0. The home team erupted in the fifth inning, putting up four runs thanks to extra base hits for a 7-0 advantage. Fort Lewis got one back in the top of the sixth when Jadyn Gilley came around to scoring on an error. The Mavericks buckled down defensively, limiting the damage to just one run for a 7-1 score. Mesa would pick up the game's final run in the bottom of the inning, doubling to center field for an 8-1 lead that would prove to be the final.

Game Two: Colorado Mesa 11, Fort Lewis 3
The scoring carried over into the first inning of game two with Mesa getting up 1-0 off a double before a fly out to right field ended the inning. The Mavericks doubled it up in the bottom of the second, plating one on a fielding error to lead 2-0 after two. The Skyhawks picked up a leadoff single from Breanna Baca to start the first, but stout defensive effort held the blue and gold scoreless.

Mesa earned its third run of the game in the third inning, but Fort Lewis finally broke through for a run in the following inning. Gilley led off the inning with a single and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. The sophomore moved over to third on a productive groundout from Sydney Stewart and scored on an RBI out from Madyson Devers. The Mavericks said, "not so fast", though, plating a pair in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 5-1.

Despite the respond from the Mavericks, the Skyhawks continued to press for runs. Baca found her second hit of the afternoon to score Hannah Rutherford. Baca would then score to make it 5-3 after a double from Alex Tenorio put the outfielder in scoring position. Each time the Skyhawks came close, the home squad responded, this time with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-3. The Mavericks rolled to an 11-3 run rule win, capped off by a wild pitch score to end the game.
