Skyhawks Split a Pair at Home Versus ThunderWolves

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team earned a split in its return home on Friday, falling to CSU Pueblo in game one by a score of 6-5 but rallying for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap. Fort Lewis moves to 4-19 on the year and 4-10 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while CSU Pueblo sits at 11-8 overall and 7-7 in the league.

Game One: CSU Pueblo 6, Fort Lewis 5
CSU Pueblo picked up a one-out triple in the top of the second inning to find a runner in scoring position. The runner would eventually score the game's first run on a misfired throw from the Skyhawks catcher, bringing in the game's first run. Fort Lewis found the equalizer in the bottom of the frame, benefitting from a leadoff triple from Cat Rodman. Rodman would eventually score on a Taylor Beaman single to make it 1-1.

The Pack answered back, pushing another run across in the third inning for a 2-1 lead that would stand through three innings of play. The real damage came in the top of the fourth when a two-run shot from the Pack, followed by a score on an error made it a 5-1 ballgame. The Skyhawks came soaring back in the bottom of the inning, picking up RBIs from Beaman, Taya Opheim, and Tenorio to see the Skyhawks down by just one run.

The visitors extended the lead to 6-4 in the top of the sixth and put the bats in the hands of the Skyhawks who were trying for a comeback. Fort Lewis worked a trio of walks to load them up for Madyson Devers, and the freshman delivered with an RBI fielder's choice to make it 6-5. The Pack got out of the frame with a flyout to center field, and the score would stand heading into the seventh. Fort Lewis again loaded them up in the seventh, but a groundout to shortstop halted the rally in a 6-5 final score.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 6, CSU Pueblo 4
The Skyhawks got on the board first, bringing home a run on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. Starting pitcher Amiee Shanks made quick work of the Pack in the following inning, sitting down three in a row to give her team back the bats. Madyson Devers and Alex Tenorio got the second inning cooking with a pair of singles to see runners on the corners. Tenorio moved over to second base on a steal, and Jadyn Gilley followed that up with a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.

CSU Pueblo started to get a feel for Shanks in the circle, plating four runs on four hits and one error in the top of the third to take the first lead of the afternoon at 4-3. The score held into the bottom of the fourth inning when a Tenorio homer over the left-field wall put the blue and gold up 5-4. Mann came in to relieve the starting Shanks in the circle, keeping the opposing bats off balance heading into the final two innings of play.

The Skyhawks got the insurance they needed in the bottom of the sixth inning, picking up a huge home run from Taya Opheim to go ahead 6-4 heading into the final inning of play. The Pack picked up an infield single with two outs, but a looking strikeout out of the hand of Mann closed the door on a 6-4 Fort Lewis win.
