Fort Lewis College Softball Rallies to Take Game Two, Head Coach Dwight Sanders Earns First Career Win

DURANGO, Colo. – Playing in its first home game of the season, the Fort Lewis College softball team rallied to salvage a split with Adams State University, taking game two by a final score of 7-4. Fort Lewis sits at 1-14 on the year and 1-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Adams State moves to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the league.

"Tonight was a really special and memorable win for me and my coaching staff," recognized head coach Dwight Sanders who earned his first win at the helm. "A diving play from a freshman to earn the win is special. We had to battle through adversity, but the team rose to the challenge and got it done. This is a great group of players that I am fortunate to enjoy this first win with."

Game One: Adams State 10, Fort Lewis 8 (8 innings)
The Grizzlies jumped ahead in the first inning, but a single from Katie Pippel evened the score in the bottom of the second. Jadyn Gilley drew a bases-loaded walk to bring another run across, giving the Skyhawks a 2-1 lead after two. The lead was short-lived, though, with two more Adams State runs coming across in the third for a 3-2 score.

Freshman Alex Tenorio gave her team back the lead in the bottom of the fourth, ripping her fourth triple of the year to right-center and scoring a pair for a 4-3 lead. The back-and-forth affair continued into the sixth inning with the Skyhawks on top 6-5. The Grizzlies took advantage of defensive miscues in the top of the seventh, plating a run on a throwing error to knot it up at 6-6.

The Skyhawks had nothing going in the bottom of the frame, sending things into an extra-inning affair. Adams State's offense exploded in the eighth, first with a two-RBI single to right field, then with a two-RBI double to center to go up 10-6. Fort Lewis attempted a comeback in the bottom of the frame, bringing in two runs, but the game ended in a 10-8 final score.
