Skyhawks Thrive in the Elements, Soar to Series Sweep of Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – The Saturday forecast called for flurries and a Fort Lewis College softball sweep as the Skyhawks took two from Adams State to earn the series win. Fort Lewis earned the wins behind all-out defense, timely hitting, and steady pitching to improve to 3-14 on the year and 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Game One: Fort Lewis 6, Adams State 5
The Skyhawks broke through in the second inning, taking advantage of back-to-back singles to go ahead 1-0. Jaden Blaise Redus doubled the lead in the ensuing at-bat with a fielder's choice to allow Hannah Rutherford to score. The inning was capped off by an Alex Tenorio triple to right field which scored Taylor Beaman from first for a 3-0 edge.

The Grizzlies bit back in the top of the third, putting together three hits to plate two runs for a 3-2 score. Adams State continued to work the momentum, overtaking the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring a pair to go up one run. The lead stood until the bottom of the fifth when a single from Jadyn Gilley scored Tenorio to tie it up. Sydney Stewart 's at-bat followed, and the freshman stepped up with an infield fielder's choice to bring Katie Pippel home for a 5-4 lead.

The lead flip-flopped yet again, this time in the top of the sixth when a solo home run to left field tied things at 5-5. The Fort Lewis no-quit attitude remained intact, and Rutherford put the team in good position to reclaim a lead with a leadoff double. She then moved to third with a heads-up stolen base, eventually scoring with a groundout from Blaise Redus. Adams State threatened in the top of the seventh, putting two on with an error and single to centerfield. The defense buckled down from there, executing a stout play to get the lead runner off, followed by a flashy double play to end the game.

Statistical Leaders

Game Two: Fort Lewis 6, Adams State 3
Fort Lewis was the first to strike again, earning a run on an outfield single by Blaise Redus. Beaman followed with an RBI single to right field to see the home team up 2-0 after two innings of play. Adams State struck back in its follow at-bats, putting a runner in scoring position with a one-out double and bringing her home with an outfield single for a 2-1 score.

The visitors found a go-ahead opportunity in the top of the fourth, picking up two doubles and a single to go up 3-2 with nobody down. The Skyhawk defense recollected and recorded three-straight outs, the third on a heroic diving play from Blaise Redus at second base, to trail by one run. With the bats back in their hands, the Skyhawks looked to their veteran leader, Taylor Beaman, to come through with two outs in the fourth. The senior did just that, belting a standup double down the right-field line to score a pair for a 4-3 lead.

Hailie Mann came in to pitch in the top of the fifth and did her job, allowing her defense to play behind her to preserve the 4-3 lead. Fort Lewis added insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, picking up an RBI double from Sydney Stewart and scoring another on an error to double the lead at 6-3. Mann faced the minimum in the sixth inning, setting up the blue and gold for a win-capturing seventh inning. The Grizzlies picked up a one-out single to left and advanced on the throw, putting one in scoring position. The following batter put a charge into one, but a great read in right field from Cara Daugherty resulted in a sprawling out. Gilley continued to man the hot corner, fielding a two-out grounder to put an exclamation point on win number two of the day.
