Late goal downs Skyhawks in nonconference finale on Sunday

SAN ANGELO, Texas – A goal in the 83rd minute stood as the difference in a nonconference road loss for the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team on Sunday. The Skyhawks drop to 1-4-1 on the year while their opponent, Angelo State University, improves to 5-0-1 overall.

"I am really pleased with the growth of this team today," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We asked a lot of them tactically and physically in how we need to compete against another undefeated, regionally ranked team."

The Belles outshot the Skyhawks 20-3 for the match, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Junior Katie Dunbabin played all 90 minutes at goal for the Skyhawks, compiling five saves along the way. Freshman Delaney Foley and sophomore Sabrina Reyes each had one shot on goal.

The Belles charted the game's first shot in the third minute, but a block from the Fort Lewis defender kept it at bay. Sophomore Julia Johnson put up the Skyhawks' first shot just two minutes later to establish offensive pressure early. Dunbabin collected her first save of the afternoon in the 19th minute when Angelo State's Neleh Coleman booted a shot bottom right, but a veteran move held things scoreless.

Angelo State sent its seventh shot of the half on goal in the 25th minute, but it would be another save for the junior keeper to keep it knotted. The Belles rattled off a flurry of shots in the final 20 minutes of the half, but the goose eggs remained heading into the break. Shots were 11-1 in favor of the home squad in the half.

Reyes had the team's first shot on goal for the match, sending on bottom center into the lap of the opposing keeper in the 64th minute of play. Foley echoed the attempt five minutes later, but a save top left kept the game tied. Angelo State eventually broke through in the 83rd minute with a goal from Jordan Grace, her third of the season, breaking the scoreless spell. Defense held the Skyhawks at bay through the remainder of the match to earn a hard-fought victory.

"We knew that coming into these regional games that we would have to suffer a bit. We told ourselves that if we got three results out of the six that we would be pretty happy, and we were seven minutes away from getting that third result," acknowledged Clarke.
