Men’s Golf takes on Farmers Insurance Sam Proal Invitational

DURANGO, Colo. – After a competitive season opener at The Writz at Mile High last week, the Fort Lewis College men's golf team is headed to Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo., for the Farmers Insurance Sam Proal Invitational.
 
Hosted by Colorado State University Pueblo, the Walking Stick Golf Course holds 7,147 yards of challenging golf on the campus of CSU Pueblo. The course has a par of 72 alongside a slope rating of 134 on Blue Grass.
 
"I think last week really opened our eyes to how tough our competition will be this year," Fort Lewis Head Coach Jim Foltz said. "Our guys took last week to heart; they saw a glimpse of what the RMAC will look like this season. We will be facing a lot of similar competition at this invitational, and luckily for us we've played at Walking Stick under pressure before. The guys are excited and ready to go out there and compete."
 
Strong Field
The Invitational will feature a plethora of strong programs such as CSU Pueblo, Dallas Baptist University, University of Texas at Tyler, Ottawa University, Dodge City Community College, Hutchinson Community College, Lubbock Christian University, Colorado Mesa University, and Regis University.
 
Last Time Out
Last weekend the Skyhawks competed at the Writz at Mile High on Bear Creek Golf Course in Lakewood, Colo. FLC took 10th in the tournament as a team while true freshman Traejan Andrews led Fort Lewis with a tie for fourt-place individually. Andrews shot a 213 (-3) across the tournament with 16 birdies, and a single eagle.
 
Nicholas Krantz recorded the second-best finish for FLC, shooting a 226 (+10), and earning a tie for 41st place. Next up on the board for FLC was Riley Rottschafer in a tie for 50th with a 230 (+14) followed by Carson Kerr in a tie for 57th with a 231 (+15), then Ronald Kildall III in a tie for 62nd shooting a 234 (+18), and lastly Henry Poston in 73rd with a 245 (+29).
 
The Skyhawks did have one more competitor in Kellen Kudrna, but he competed independently and finished in a tie for 43rd shooting a 227 (+11).
 
As a unit the Skyhawks shot a 1130, a total of 50 strokes over par. FLC shot an average of 3.33 on par threes, 4.36 on par fours, and 4.93 on par fives. A pair of eagles thanks to Andrews and Kerr.
 
Looking Ahead
Next week the Fort Lewis men's golf team will get a week off before traveling to Amarillo, Tex., for the Ryan Palmer Invitational hosted by West Texas A&M University. The tournament will be held from Oct. 3-4 at Amarillo Country Club.
