Skyhawks rise through final round of San Juan Intercollegiate

MONTROSE, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's golf team shot its second-lowest team score of the tournament on Tuesday afternoon to finish the San Juan Intercollegiate with a combined score of 857 (+5) overall and capture tenth place at The Bridges Golf and Country Club.

The Skyhawks turned in a 285 (+1) after their final trip around the 7,017-yard, par 71 Nicklaus Design course. It marked a four-stroke improvement from a first-round 289 (+5), but a two-stroke drop from a second-round 283 (-1). Fort Lewis' B team shot its best round overall, turning in a 287 (+3) to best Colorado School of Mines' B team, 879 (+27) to 891 (+39) for the tournament.

Colorado Christian University, which debuted at No. 18 in the preseason Golf Coaches Association of America Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, ran away with the tournament, winning with a commanding 14-shot lead on an 817 (-35) team total. CCU's own Bradley Mulder and Colorado Mesa University's Henry Starr shared individual medalist honors, with the duo finishing 12-under-par at 201 overall.

Fort Lewis' A team was led by junior Talan Gover, who led in T-14 after a third-round 70 (-1), his second round under par at the tournament, to stand at 209 (-4) overall. Sophomore Chase Rogers picked up T-23 after finishing with an even par (71) to score a 212 (-1) overall. Mateo Berastegui took T-30 on a 214 (+1), Dallin Stephens T-61 on a 224 (+11), and Benjamin Harding T-71 on a 234 (+21).

As for the B team, freshman Preston Ross burst onto the links in his collegiate debut, shooting an even par in his third round to add to his first two scores of 70 (-1) and 69 (-2) to capture T-17 with a three-under 210. Freshman Johnathon Smith was next in line at T-37 on a 215 (+2), followed by Anderson Helmer in T-63 on a 225 (+12) and Connor Burton in 69^th on a 229 (+16).

Fort Lewis will enjoy two weeks of rest before returning to action at The Hrnciar down at The Territory Golf Club in Duncan, Okla., on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6.
