Skyhawks rally but fall short in five set loss to Eagles

CHADRON, Neb. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team fell short of the reverse sweep on Friday night, falling in five sets on the road to Chadron State College in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Fort Lewis dips to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play while Chadron State improves to 6-8, 4-1 RMAC.

"This is a tough loss for us. We did not play at the level that I know we are capable of playing at and our fans have seen us play at," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We will use this game as a learning moment and bounce back for tomorrow's match.

The Skyhawks hit .132 for the match compared to a .173 clip for the Eagles. The difference maker came on the defensive front where Chadron compiled a staggering 18 blocks versus four for Fort Lewis. Senior Rylee Johnson was one shy of a career-high with 15 kills on a .429 efficiency. Junior Lauren Shea and sophomore Alexis Hobie followed with 11 kills apiece. Senior Kamryn Lopez had a season-high 32 digs—two short of tying a career mark. Shea followed with a season-high 19 digs while senior Joviana Romero and sophomore Jade Martinez high double-figures at 11 and 10, respectively.

Set One (23-25)
It was a game of runs from the get-go, each side seeing scoring spurts before the score settled at 16 all. The set would tie again at 18-18 with a kill from Hobie. From there, the lead swapped sides before a short burst had Chadron at set point. Johnson tallied a kill and a block alongside sophomore Natalia Lambos to extend the set, but a kill on the outside ended it in 25-23 fashion.

Set Two (23-25)
Both sides traded off turns leading through the early points of set two before a service ace from freshman Ella Butler had Fort Lewis up 12-11. The Eagle earned a 6-1 scoring run to surge ahead 17-13, only to be slowed by another kill off the hand of Johnson out of the middle. Hobie would go on to tally back-to-back kills, followed by an Eagle error, to tie it up at 19-19. Each side has a three-point run toward the end of the set, but an ace and kill fell in favor of the home squad to close it out.

Set Three (25-23)
Chadron maintained the advantage as the score turned to double-digits, but a 6-1 Skyhawks run had the visitors ahead 15-12. The run was highlighted by four kills from Romero on the pin. The Eagle countered to make it 15-15, and the score out knot twice more before Fort Lewis had separation at 22-18 courtesy of an error. Chadron committed two service errors down the stretch, and Johnson closed out the third with a kill to send the match to four.

Set Four (25-22)
Fort Lewis went ahead 9-6 in the fourth set with a double block from Butler and Martinez, and the lead stayed on the visitor's side through to the end of the set. Chadron managed to pull within a pair at 17-15, but a huge run brought on set point Skyhawks. The Eagles would not go down quietly, though, stringing together five points before a Shea kill on the right side pushed the match to a deciding set.

Set Five (4-15)
It was all Eagles in the finale as the home team quickly got ahead 11-1 before a Romero kill could slow the roll. The opening run featured a pair of blocks and service aces to go along with kills from both pins. Fort Lewis picked up another pair of points on Chadron errors before two kills and the 18th block of the night ended the match.
