Skyhawks swept by No. 21 Orediggers on the road

GOLDEN, Colo. – Facing its third nationally-ranked foe since beginning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 21 Colorado School of Mines on Saturday. Fort Lewis drops to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the RMAC while Mines improves to 10-4, 5-1 RMAC.

"This was a challenging weekend, and we did not perform to our abilities," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "I believe this will be a great learning experience and growth opportunity for us going forward."

The offensive woes continued for the Skyhawks who hit just .150 for the match with 16 attacking errors. The Orediggers, who average a .264 efficiency on the year, hit .330 in the three-setter. Mines showed off defensively as well, totaling 56 digs (18.7/set) on the night compared to 40 for Fort Lewis.

Sophomore Alexis Hobie led the team with 10 kills on 34 swings, followed by senior Rylee Johnson at six kills out of the middle. Senior Kamryn Lopez led the squad with nine digs to go along with three assists at the libero position. Coordinating the offense was sophomore Jade Martinez who earned her first career start and dished out 23 assists.

Mines was led by Shannon Perna who knocked down 15 kills on 29 swings (.483), followed by Emily Knight at 10 kills. Drew Stokes, reigning RMAC Setter of the Week, racked up 41 assists.

Set One (18-25)
The Skyhawks saw the lead early in the set, benefiting from a 3-0 spurt to go ahead 7-5. The lead would eventually swap sides when a run had the Orediggers ahead 15-12. Junior Lauren Shea slowed the roll with her third kill of the set, but Mines answered right back to make it an 18-13 score. Fort Lewis went on to score four straight, earning kills from junior JJ Curry and Johnson, to pull within one at 18-17. That was as close as it would get, though, as a late surge closed out the set in a 25-18 score.

Set Two (21-25)
The blue and gold got ahead by a 5-0 margin to begin the second set and maintained a steady lead before a run flipped the script in favor of the Orediggers. Freshman Ella Butler managed to side her team out with a quick swing out of the middle, making it 10 all. Fort Lewis stayed within striking distance throughout the set and pulled within a point with another Butler kill to make it 22-21. Mines stayed tough down the stretch and ended the set with a pair of kills to go ahead 2-0.

Set Three (11-25)
The score would remain tight early, but Mines put together another clutch run to find space at 8-4. Martinez snuck her first kill of the night in to make it 13-8 before the night's longest string of points put the home squad ahead 20-8. Hobie, who went quiet midway through the match, ended things on a positive note with a trio of kills to push the score to 23-11 but a service error and kill ended the match in straight sets.

Up Next
Fort Lewis (4-8, 2-4) will see another ranked opponent next Friday with a road match versus No. 20 Colorado Mesa University (9-4, 4-2 RMAC). Mesa's lone league losses have come at the hands of MSU Denver on September 8 and 24.
