Volleyball drops road match to No. 21 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Facing its third nationally-ranked opponent in the last four matches, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 21 Colorado Mesa University inside Brownson Arena on Friday.

Fort Lewis falls to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Colorado Mesa lifts to 10-4 on the year and 5-2 in league play.

"Mesa plays a fast game, and tonight we struggled to find an answer for that," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We served tough and that created opportunities for us, but it wasn't enough. We need to make adjustments to be ready for the next match."

The Skyhawks were limited to a .080 hitting percentage for the match compared to an eye-popping .435 efficiency for the Mavericks. Fort Lewis totaled five service aces and four blocks for the match. Junior JJ Curry led the team with five kills to go along with four digs. Senior Joviana Romero and junior Lauren Shea followed with four kills apiece. Sophomore Jade Martinez led the team with 18 assists and seven digs. Freshman Ella Butler was stout from the service line and racked up four aces.

Set One (15-25)
The Skyhawks kept the score close early in the set, forcing seven tied scores before the Mavericks settled in for a pair of scoring runs. First, it was a 7-1 run that saw a pair of kills and service aces to pull the home squad ahead 13-9. The Skyhawks got the ball back on a service error, but a quick side-out led to a six-point run to extend the lead to 19-10. Seniors Rylee Johnson and Romero earned kills down the stretch, but a kill from Mesa's middle blocker ended the set in a 25-15 final.

Set Two (19-25)
Fort Lewis grabbed an 8-7 lead in set two, finding points off a kill from Johnson and block to go up. The set was neck and neck midway through, but another scoring run had the Mavericks ahead 18-12. Sophomore Ruthie Ridderhoff came off the bench for a kill out of the middle to see the score at 22-15, and Curry followed with a kill of her own to keep the set alive. The Skyhawks earned a pair of kills on the outside to hold off set point, but Mesa eventually closed it out with a pin swing of their own.

Set Three (10-25)
Butler got the third set cooking with back-to-back service aces, and the Skyhawks held the lead until a Maverick kill made it 5-5. The home squad was all gas from there, putting together dominant runs to quickly seal the match in a 25-10 final. Fort Lewis had kills from Romero and Shea in the final set and collected five kills to go along with five errors in the finale.

Up Next
Fort Lewis (4-9, 2-5 RMAC) will look to bounce back tomorrow night versus Westminster College in Salt Lake City. The Griffins are 5-10 on the year and 3-4 in conference play after earning a 3-0 win over Western Colorado University this evening.
