Meraz-Fishbein and Reyes lead Skyhawks to first win of the season, 2-0 over Greyhounds

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team dominated Eastern New Mexico University on Thursday night under the lights en route to the first win of the season, 2-0. Fort Lewis improves to 1-3-1 on the year while ENMU dips to 2-2 overall.

"Tonight was a collective effort. That is what we've been continuing to ask for over the last few games, we want them to stay together because eventually the shoe's going to drop, and they will start believing in themselves," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We were able to press together, defend together, and keep the ball by supporting each other. These are all things that we have been working on but haven't been able to get going at the same time. This game was a reflection of that hard work."

The Skyhawks were dominant from kickoff and remained that way, outshooting the Greyhounds 20-1 for the match. They held a 10-0 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore Gaby Meraz-Fishbein scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute, the first of her Skyhawks career, off the assist from sophomore McKenna Ford and freshman Rozlin Gomez. Sophomore Sabrina Reyes doubled the lead in the 26th minute with her first goal of the season, again off the assist of Ford.

"In our last three games that we played we were under a lot of pressure, and that made passing difficult," acknowledged Clarke. "That set us up to keep growing each time we played, even though it was difficult. It was passing that led us to goal-scoring opportunities tonight."

For had four shots, two on target, to lead the team in 71 minutes of play. Elizabeth David had a pair of key looks throughout the game and narrowly missed notching a goal with a pair of shots on goal. ENMU's lone shot of the evening came off the foot of Samantha Vasquez in the 55th minute as junior Katie Dunbabin and sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the shutout.

Some games start slow, others are electric from the jump—tonight's match was the latter. Freshman Anna Tucker put the game's first shot on target just two minutes into play after attempting to flick one behind the back off the pass from Ford. Gomez made the most of a prime look in the fifth minute and sent the ball top left, but a sprawling save from the opposing keeper held the game scoreless.

The zeros on the board wouldn't last long, though, as the 12th minute rolled around and Fort Lewis found itself in position to put something together. The play unfolded when Ford intercepted an attempted clear just outside of the box and sent a sharp pass to Gomez up the middle. Gomez wasted no time dishing a pass to Meraz-Fishbein who snuck the first goal of the season just inside the far post.

Feeling the rejuvenating energy of getting an early lead, the Skyhawks were relentless in their pursuit of another. The pressure paid off in the 26th minute when Ford slid a short pass to the feet of Reyes and the sophomore booted one from distance out of the reach of the keeper to make it 2-0. Both sides played a physical game down the stretch as the lead held heading into halftime.

The Skyhawks continued to dominate possession in the second half of action, limiting the Greyhounds to short spurts of time with the ball. Fort Lewis had a handful of good looks throughout the second half, finding the post on a pair to hold the score at 2-0. Sophomore Aubrey Swindle had what would be the finest opportunity in the half in the 82nd minute, using her physicality to beat her defender downfield. Swindle remained poised as she closed in on the goal and sent an angled shot off the crossbar—inches from finding the game's third goal. Fort Lewis tallied one more shot in the waning minutes and held the Greyhounds at bay for a 2-0 final.

"This game was important in that we have a lot of players that deserve opportunities to play, and experience is the only way that we know how to get them prepared," said Clarke. "It was good to see so many players get time on the field for their growth as well as our ability to rest some legs heading into Sunday."

Up Next
Fort Lewis (1-3-1) will be on the road this Sunday when the team travels to San Angelo, Texas for a noon slate against Angelo State University. Fort Lewis is 2-4-1 all-time versus Angelo State with the most recent matchup on Sept. 6, 2019 going to the Belles in a 3-0 final.

Angelo State is 3-0-1 on the year with wins over Regis, CSU Pueblo, and Colorado Christian to their credit. The Belles average 2.45 goals per game while holding the opposition to a .75 mark through four contests.

"I've seen this team in the past, and they are always one of the top teams in the region," said Clarke in closing. "We expect to play one of the more difficult games of the season on Sunday, and we are looking forward to it.
