Skyhawks make history, record best finishes at NCAA DII Cross Country National Championship and bring home All-American accolades

JOPLIN, Mo. – Individual school records, team records, and a pair of All-American honors gave Fort Lewis College men's and women's cross country plenty to celebrate at the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championships.

The men's team finished 13th in the loaded field—the best team result in program history. The women's team turned in a 20th place finish which also stands as the best in program history. Below is a breakdown of the individual results for the men's 10k and the women's 6k.

 

Men's Results
The Skyhawks men finished in 13th place with 445 points, coming in ahead of Lee (Tenn.), Augusta, and Western Washington. Sophomore Eli Smith led the pack for Fort Lewis with a school record time of 30:38.4 in the 10K to place 53rd. After sitting in 76th place through the opening 3K, Smith went on to jump 23 spots. Senior Henry Barth (personal best) followed with an 82nd-place finish, recording a time of 30:57.7.

The next three for Fort Lewis followed in quick succession of each other, first with senior Conner Dosmann's 117th-place effort. Dosmann posted a time of 31:21.3 (personal best) and was consistent throughout the race, slowly moving up in the final 2K to secure his finish. Then, it was sophomore Brady Burrough who clocked a time of 31:27.3 for 125th place, followed by sophomore Bean Minor was crossed the line in 126th place with a time of 31:27.7.

Sophomore Cebastian Marquez (32:10.2) and freshman Jonah Denison (33:32.3) rounded out the seven competitors for Fort Lewis with 196th and 246th place finishes, respectively.

Wingate University took home the team title with 70 points, followed by Colorado School of Mines (79 points) and East Central University (108 points). Four conference programs finished in the top 10 and eight earned top 20 spots. William Amponsah of West Texas A&M earned the individual title with a time of 29:04.3.

Women's Results
The Skyhawks women finished in 20th place with 530 points, coming in ahead of Catawba, Saginaw Valley, and Flager. Senior Katie Heck solidified herself as one of the all-time greats for Fort Lewis with her second-straight cross country All-American Honor. Heck finished in 22nd place with a school record time of 20:31.0. Freshman Linda Weigang was impressive in her own right, earning All-American honors with a 39th place race and a personal best time of 20:41.3.

 

Sophomore Mikenna Hoffman was the next to cross the finish line for the Skyhawks, clocking a personal best time of 22:11.1 to place 163rd. In 189th place, it was sophomore Marisol Castilleja whose time of 22:24.8 established a new personal best. Freshman Tessa Stadler rounded out the top five, coming in 203rd place with a time of 22:37.4—good for a personal best.

Freshman Skylar Charlie (23:06.5) and junior Brandy Ray (24:18.4) rounded out the seven competitors for Fort Lewis with 227th and 251st place finishes, respectively.

Grand Valley State took home the team titles with 59 points, followed by Adams State (86 points) and Colorado School of Mines (121 points). In total, three RMAC programs placed in the top 10, and seven ranked in the top 20. Lindsay Cunningham of Winona State University earned her second-straight national title with a time of 19:30.1.
