Mavericks’ slugfest defeats Fort Lewis in RMAC opener

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team made 11 errors while Colorado Mesa University procured 22 total hits on the afternoon, allowing the Mavericks to sweep the Skyhawks on the opening day of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play by scores of 11-4 and 10-2 respectively.
 
Fort Lewis now falls to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play while the Mavericks advance to 4-6 and 2-0 in RMAC play.
 
Alyssa Gutierrez was the only Skyhawk with three hits across the afternoon and also stole one base. Rylee Crouch led Colorado Mesa this afternoon with five hits, five runs, and four runs batted in. Additionally, Crouch hit a double and two home runs including a two-run shot to walk off game two and implement the mercy rule.
 
GAME ONE – COLORADO MESA 11, FORT LEWIS 4
The Mavericks produced 11 runs on 11 hits in the game, but it was a combined eight errors by the Skyhawks that allowed five of said runs to cross the plate unearned.
 
Fort Lewis struck first, producing two runs in the top of the second inning thanks to a home run from Caydee Farnworth. FLC added another run in the top of the third on a solo home run from Sloan Shotton, and the final run in the top of the fourth on an error by the Mavs off the bat of Cara Daugherty.
 
Colorado Mesa scored a run in every inning except the first, putting up three runs in the bottom of the second and five runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Mavs tallied six of the eleven total runs on the long ball utilizing a two-run homer from Aislyn Sharp in the second, a solo home run from Rylee Crouch in the third, and a three-run jack from Miranda Pruitt in the fourth.
 
Farnworth (0-4) was the dealt the loss after giving up nine runs – four of which were earned – nine hits, and just two walks alongside five strikeouts. Hannah Sattler (2-2) went the distance for CMU, throwing her fourth complete game this season. Sattler allowed four runs and eight hits to complement four strikeouts and no walks.
 
GAME TWO – COLORADO MESA 10, FORT LEWIS 2 (5 Inn.)
The offensive prowess of the Mavs continued in game two as the home team slugged its way once again to 11 total hits with three home runs. Fort Lewis was able to stifle CMU in a pair of innings, but three untimely errors allowed Colorado Mesa to run away with game two via the mercy rule.
 
Labraida Tenorio (1-3) toed the rubber to start the game, but the Mavericks' bats were too hot to handle. Scoring six runs in the opening frame on two walks and a pair of home runs from Aislyn Sharp and Brandi Haller, Fort Lewis was forced to go to the bullpen. Amiee Shanks stepped into the circle and allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits, four walks, and three strikeouts through the final four frames.
 
After putting up zeros across the first three innings, the Skyhawks finally scored in the top of the fourth inning as Hannah Rutherford was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Two at-bats later a wild pitch from the Mavs allowed Daugherty to score the final run of the game for FLC.
 
Kennedy Vis (1-3) notched her first win of the season throwing 3.0 innings and allowing two earned runs on a single hit while walking six batters and striking out two. Marisa Nehm held the Skyhawks hitless in the final two innings of relief. Tenorio was credited for the loss.
 
NEXT UP
The Skyhawks and Mavericks will close out the four-game series tomorrow, Feb. 20, with another doubleheader. Game times at the CMU Softball field are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
