Skyhawks break even with Mines in extra inning duels, split weekend series 2-2

BLOOMFIELD, N.M. – In a pair of thrilling extra innings contests that provided 18 total innings of play across the evening, the Fort Lewis College softball team was only able to topple the Colorado School of Mines offense once, winning game one 5-4 in ten innings and falling in game two 6-5 after eight. The Skyhawks and Orediggers break even on the series 2-2.

Fort Lewis moves to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests, while Mines advances to 7-7 overall and 6-2 in RMAC play.

Catheryn Rodman and Alex Tenorio each had three-hit afternoons to lead the Skyhawks. Sydney Wilson led Mines with a four-hit afternoon, also scoring two runs and drawing a walk.

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 5, MINES 4
For the second-straight day, Mines opened game one by scoring in the opening frame. The Orediggers grabbed a quick 1-0 lead after an error allowed Aubree Karraker to score. In the bottom of the inning, Tenorio drew a two-out walk and would later score from first on a double from Rodman.

In the top of the third inning, a pair of base hits put the Orediggers on base and a passed ball moved the runners to second and third. A ground ball to the shortstop and an error on the following play pushed two more runs across for Mines.

The third error of the night by Fort Lewis handed Mines its fourth run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Alyssa Gutierrez led off the inning with a hustle triple and scored on a groundball from Sloan Shotton. Tenorio and Rodman then went back-to-back with solo home runs to tie the game at 4-4.

After five and a half innings of a defensive duel, Cara Daugherty sent a two-out solo home run, the first of her career, to dead center to walk it off 5-4 in favor of Fort Lewis. Amiee Shanks (4-1) threw all ten innings for her third complete game of the season and fourth win. Shanks allowed just one of her four runs to go down as earned on nine hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO – MINES 6, FORT LEWIS 5
It was a pitcher's duel once more in game two, as Caydee Farnworth toed the rubber alongside Mines' Taylor Wayne. The Orediggers got the early jump, scoring a three-pack of runs thanks to a three-run homer from Lexie Semeyn to left field in the top of the first inning.

Wayne held down the Skyhawks in back-to-back frames until the third inning when an error and a fielder's choice allowed Izzy Giroux and Gutierrez to reach base in succession. Kayla Stone took the plate and lined out to center field to drive in Giroux and put FLC on the board. Two innings later, hits began to fall in the fifth as Giroux and Gutierrez went back-to-back with a pair of doubles. Shotton singled through the right side the following at-bat, and Skyhawks had tied it up 3-3.

Farnworth and Wayne continued their duel, holding both sides at three through seven innings of play. In the top of the eighth, a two-out single and an error by Fort Lewis were all that Mines needed to capitalize and take a 6-3 lead. The Skyhawks were able to drive in a pair of runs and place the tying run on third, but the Orediggers finally went to the bullpen, and Cassidy Chvatal struck out the final batter.

While taking the loss, Farnworth had an excellent outing allowing six runs, only three of which were earned, on nine hits, five walks, and 13 strikeouts.
