Eagles, Skyhawks split opening games of RMAC series

CHADRON, Neb. – Catheryn Rodman's hot-handed bat provided five of the Skyhawks seven runs to lift the Fort Lewis College softball team to a 7-6 win in game one over Chadron State College, but the Eagles pitching staff would strikeout 10 batters in game two to hold the Skyhawks down and force a run-rule victory, 9-1, thus splitting the first two of a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series.

Games three and four in the series will continue tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chadron State College Softball Field.

Fort Lewis now stands at 6-11 overall and 4-6 in RMAC play while the Eagles are now 4-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 7, CHADRON STATE 6
Rodman was the star in game one, driving in five of the Skyhawks seven total runs, three of which were by way of the long ball. Caydee Farnworth (1-6) earned the win in the circle, throwing 4.0 innings of one-run ball on four hits and three walks while fanning four.

All it took was one at-bat for Rodman to put FLC on the board, sending a solo home run to center field in the top of the second inning. In the third inning, Kayla Stone and Alyssa Gutierrez reached base early allowing Rodman to single to the shortstop and drive in the pair of runs. Sabrina Carrillo doubled the following at-bat to drive in Rodman, and Izzy Giroux singled next to drive in Carrillo.

The Eagles finally scored in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo shot from Bailey Steinke. In the top of the seventh, Alex Tenorio drew a leadoff walk to open the inning. Rodman found the grass over the outfield fence once more with her second home run of the day to lift FLC ahead 7-1. Chadron tallied six hits in the final frame of play to pull back within one, 7-6, but the Skyhawks got the final out they needed with a strikeout. Chadron State's Tori Huag (1-4) was credited for the loss.

GAME TWO –
Amiee Shanks (3-2) toed the rubber in game two but was chased out after just 2.2 innings allowing six earned runs on seven hits with one walk. The Eagles Delaney Farnsworth (1-4) threw a gem en route to her first collegiate win. The freshman handled 10 of the game's 15 total outs by way of strikeout while also allowing one unearned run on four hits and one walk.

After reaching base on a single to open the bottom of the first inning for Chadron State, Aliyah Rothstein scored on a single from Ashland Baca. Rodman singled to right field to kick off the second inning for Fort Lewis, stealing second base the following at-bat. Stone forced a fielder's choice on a ground ball, and an error by Farnsworth allowed Rodman to score FLC's lone run of game two.

Chadron pushed across three runs in the bottom of the second inning and five more in the bottom of the fifth, then held the Skyhawks scoreless with just two hits through the final three innings to force the mercy rule, 9-1.

NEXT FOE
The next challenge on deck for the Skyhawks through RMAC play is the ThunderWovles from Colorado State University-Pueblo.
