Softball goes 2-0 on Opening Day

LOS LUNAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College softball team downed the University of Texas Permian Basin 5-2 and Western New Mexico University 5-3 on the opening day of the South-Central Regional Tournament at the Los Lunas Sports Complex.

The Skyhawks sweep opening day for the first time since 2019 and move to 2-0 on the season. Texas Permian Basin and Western New Mexico find themselves at 0-2 after dropping both games earlier this afternoon.

"The girls played well these first two games," head coach Dwight Sanders said. "Having such a young team you're not always sure who shows up, but they took a step in the right direction today. This group is eager to build its legacy here and leave a lasting mark on the program. We looked like a team that's been together for a while and that's exciting to see."

FORT LEWIS 5, TEXAS PERMIAN BASIN 2
Labraida Tenorio (1-0) had a solid outing in the circle in her first appearance for the Skyhawks throwing 6.0 innings and allowing five hits, two earned runs, and four walks while striking out seven to earn her first collegiate win. Holding a 5-2 lead, Amiee Shanks (1-0) closed out the final inning with no hits and one strikeout to notch her first collegiate save.

Sloan Shotton was the only Skyhawk to record two or more hits while also drawing a walk and picking up one of two stolen bases, the other by Kayla Stone. Stone also drew three walks and Katie Pippel two, and Stone, Alex Tenorio, and Catheryn Rodman all picked up a run batted in.

Stephanie Jimenez led Texas Permian Basin with two of the Falcons five total hits and the only two runs batted in for UTPB. Evelyn Duran (0-1) was dealt the loss after throwing just 0.1 of an inning and giving up three earned runs and three bases on balls.

FORT LEWIS 5, WESTERN NEW MEXICO 3
Game two was another strong outing from the blue and gold led by Shanks in the circle. Shanks, a sophomore from Tucson, Arizona, returning with 132.0 innings under her belt from last season, went all seven innings allowing three earned runs, seven hits, and one walk alongside four strikeouts.

Tenorio was a perfect 4-4 at the plate in game two, recording a double, one run scored, and driving in another. Rodman and Izzy Giroux cleaned up the remaining runs via the long ball as a three-run home run from Rodman in the top of the third inning and a solo shot from Giroux in the fourth had Fort Lewis in front 5-1. The Mustangs would drive in two more runs in the fifth, but Fort Lewis' 10 hits on the afternoon were too much for Western New Mexico to keep pace with.

No Mustang had more than a single hit on the afternoon and Laryssa Morales led the purple and gold with one hit, one run scored, and one run batted in. Kamerynn Cordova (1-1) went all seven innings allowing ten hits and five earned runs while dealing seven strikeouts in her first loss of the season.
