Skyhawks drop weekend series to Eagles

CHADRON, Neb. – While the Fort Lewis College softball team out-hit the Chadron State College Eagles 12-8 across the afternoon, timely opportunities allowed the Eagles to find the edge in both games, defeating the Skyhawks 6-5 and 3-2 in games three and four to win the four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series 3-1.

Fort Lewis now falls to 6-13 overall and 4-8 in RMAC play while Chadron State advances to an identical 6-13 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

Alex Tenorio was the only Skyhawk to notch three hits on the afternoon, while Sloan Shotton and Sabrina Carrillo each supplied two hits as well.

GAME ONE – CHADRON STATE 6, FORT LEWIS 5
While both sides went three up and three down in the opening frame, Fort Lewis finally blew it open in the top of the second inning procuring five runs on a Cara Daugherty walk and a grand slam from Shotton.

The Skyhawks rode its offensive momentum, holding Chadron State both hitless and scoreless through the first four innings. Back-to-back walks in the bottom of the fifth inning finally gave the Eagles a pair of much-needed base runners, and a pair of wild pitches two at-bats later allowed the Eagles to push across a single run.

The Eagles offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth, tallying four singles and double to score four more runs and tie the game at 5-5. Both sides remained scoreless through another inning and a half until a lead-off walk and back-to-back singles allowed Chadron State to walk off the game in the bottom of the eighth, 6-5. Tori Haug (2-4) notched the win and her second complete game for the Eagles against FLC.

GAME TWO – CHADRON STATE 3, FORT LEWIS 2
Chadron jumped on Fort Lewis early, putting up a crooked frame in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles utilized back-to-back walks to open the inning and then a double and a pair of wild pitches allowed three runs to score.

In the top of the third inning, the Skyhawks strung together three-straight singles off the bats of Alyssa Gutierrez, Shotton, and Kayla Stone to drive in the only pair of runs for FLC. Chadron's Delaney Farnsworth (2-4) allowed just four other hits across the game, holding Fort Lewis scoreless in six frames while striking out eight with not a single walk.

Fort Lewis' Labraida Tenorio (1-4) was dealt the loss after throwing 6.0 innings and allowing the three earned runs on two hits, six walks, and three strikeouts.

NEXT UP
Up next for the Skyhawks are the ThunderWolves from Colorado State University-Pueblo. The Skyhawks will host The Pack for a four-game RMAC series on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 11-12.
