Tenorio rises to the moment, Skyhawks offense overpowers Yellow Jackets

DURANGO, Colo. – After tallying just three hits through the first six innings of game one, Alex Tenorio capped off an extra-innings rally with a three-run home run to walk off the Yellow Jackets by a score of 6-3. Fort Lewis kept the offense rolling in game two, scoring in every inning of play to force the run rule and defeat Black Hills State University 9-1 through five innings on a gusty, clear afternoon on the rim.

Fort Lewis takes a 2-0 advantage in the four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series over Black Hills State, guaranteeing at least a split in the series following tomorrow's doubleheader. The Skyhawks extend its winning streak over the Yellow Jackets to 11 games and now stand at 13-18 overall and 11-13 in conference play. BHSU falls to 4-22 overall and 4-22 in RMAC play.

"It was a beautiful day to finally be back at home and I want to really thank everyone who helped us get our field ready for this weekend," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Dwight Sanders stated. "I'm really proud of our girls today. Hopefully, we gave the fans what they wanted to see, and those girls really showed some of the grit Skyhawks softball is about. These girls don't give up, and that really showed in game one against a challenging pitcher. In game two the girls hit the ball like they knew they could, and the results speak for themselves."

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 6, BLACK HILLS STATE 3
An error by the Skyhawks allowed the leadoff batter to reach base and a double from Ashlynn Pauwels just two at-bats later had the Yellow Jackets on the board first, 1-0. A pair of singles had Black Hills State in scoring position once more in the third inning, and an infield ground ball would bring the run home for the 2-0 BHSU lead.

Tallying just the second hit through five frames for Fort Lewis, Catheryn Rodman led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left center. Two innings later a single, a steal, and another single from Tyler Whitlock allowed the Yellow Jackets to push across an insurance run for the 3-1 advantage.

The Skyhawks rallied in the seventh, scoring two runs to tie the game at three apiece thanks to a trio of singles and a stolen bag from Tenorio. In the eighth, Alyssa Gutierrez singled to open the inning while Sloan Shotton reached base on a BHSU error the following at-bat. Tenorio stepped to the plate and with a 2-2 count, drilled the next pitch just inside the foul pole down the left field line to capture a 6-3 game-one win for FLC.

Amiee Shanks (9-5) notched both her ninth win and ninth complete game of the season throwing all eight innings and allowing two earned runs on eight hits. Shanks fanned four while not allowing a single base on balls, being the first Skyhawk to do so since Shanks herself led FLC to a 14-4 victory against New Mexico Highlands University on Apr. 10, 2022. Black Hills State's Shayla Tuschen (3-10) was charged with the loss.

GAME TWO – FORT LEWIS 9, BLACK HILLS STATE 1
Tenorio lit the fire under the Skyhawks offense in game one, and FLC never slowed down. Fort Lewis scored in each inning of game two, leading off with a single run in the first inning on a single from Tenorio through the left side. Tenorio and Gutierrez each singled to drive in a run in the second, while Shotton brought in the third run of the inning on a groundball to the second basemen.

Black Hills State got on the board in the top of the third inning, scoring after Whitlock and Pauwels opened the frame with a triple and double respectively. Sabrina Carrillo answered for the Skyhawks in the bottom half of the inning, clearing the left-field bleachers with a two-run moonshot of her own to extend the lead to 6-1.

A double from Shotton and a ground ball from Catheryn Rodman pushed across two more in the fourth inning for FLC, ending the frame holding Fort Lewis in the driver's seat heading into the fifth. The Yellow Jackets found just a single base hit in the top of the frame, and unable to cut the deficit, Cara Daugherty notched the Skyhawks third-straight single in the fifth following Sienna Mullin and Izzy Giroux to institute a mercy rule walk-off 9-1 in favor of Fort Lewis.

Caydee Farnworth (3-7) earned her third win of the season throwing 5.0 innings while giving up a single run on four hits and five walks while striking out seven. Kailey Bond (0-5) was credited for the loss for BHSU.
