Tenorio dominates to clinch series sweep over Black Hills State

DURANGO, Colo. – Finding themselves fighting an uphill battle not once, but twice, the Fort Lewis College softball team rose to the moment and handed Black Hills State University a pair of 7-6 and 3-2 losses to clinch its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series win of the season in a dominant 4-0 fashion on a balmy Sunday afternoon at Aspen Field.

The Skyhawks rise to 15-18 overall and an even 13-13 in conference play for the first time thus far this season. Fort Lewis extends its winning streak over Black Hills State to 13 and maintains a perfect 16-0 record over BHSU on Aspen Field. The Yellow Jackets fall to 4-24 overall and in RMAC play.

"Black Hills played us tough. They've got good coaches with plenty of good athletes," head coach Dwight Sanders shared. "One thing we really focused on this weekend was controlling what we can control and letting go of the rest. I'm proud of the group overall. They don't quit. They saw an opportunity to dominate this weekend and went out and just took it."

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 7, BLACK HILLS STATE 6
Fort Lewis, riding momentum after downing the Yellow Jackets twice yesterday, kickstarted the afternoon by scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning after Alyssa Gutierrez singled to lead off the inning, stole second base, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Alex Tenorio after a Sloan Shotton bunt moved her to third.

Black Hills State responded in tow, putting a pair of crooked numbers on the scoreboard after plating two runs in the second and three runs in the third inning. The Yellow Jackets notched two runs on a home run from Sydney Barner, the first of her career, and the other three on five singles across the pair of frames.

Stymied from the second to fourth innings, the Skyhawks seemingly could not produce any offense. Finally, in the bottom of the fifth, Tenorio doubled to create some life and FLC was off to the races. A walk and an error pushed a pair of runs across, then an Izzy Giroux single back up the middle knocked in a third. Kayla Stone stepped to the plate later in the inning and waved her fifth home run of the season goodbye to left center as three runs scored to take the 7-5 lead.

Ashlynn Pauwels put FLC on the ropes in the top of the seventh, hitting a solo home run, her eighth of the season, to cut the deficit to a single run. With two runners on base and threatening to tie the ball game, Amiee Shanks (10-5) pitched into a much-needed groundball to end the game. Shanks notched both her 10th win and complete game of the season. Shayla Tuschen (3-11) was credited with the loss, her second of the series.

GAME TWO – FORT LEWIS 3, BLACK HILLS STATE 2
Eager to take at least one game from the Skyhawks, Black Hills State was nearly lights out in the final contest. A pitcher's duel through and through, both sides went three up three down through two of the first three frames.

The Yellow Jackets saw a scoring opportunity in the second with bases loaded, but back-to-back strikeouts and an infield groundball kept BHSU off the board. Fort Lewis was able to secure the first run of the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Sabrina Carrillo to score Shotton who singled to open the inning. The Pressure finally hit in the sixth inning, however, as a pair of singles and a double off the bat of Gianna Haley scored a pair of runs to put Black Hills State back in front, 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, for the second time in the series, Giroux played hero with a single back through the middle to plate Carrillo, who doubled to open the inning, tying the game 2-2. In the eighth inning, Tenorio notched a one-out single to right field and stole second base during the following at-bat. With two outs, Carrillo stepped to the plate and with a 2-2 count, drove the ball into left field allowing Tenorio to round third and dive into home for the game-winning run.

Labraida Tenorio (2-6) dominated the Yellow Jackets, tallying 13 strikeouts across 28 at-bats: the sixth most by a Skyhawk in a single game. Tenorio allowed both earned runs on just five hits and two walks. Kailey Bond (0-6) was credited with the loss, her second of the series, while giving up three runs on 10 hits without a single walk.
