Skyhawks drop a pair to Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College softball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end as the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls handed the Skyhawks a pair of 8-3 and 2-0 losses to open the four-game, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE – NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS 8, FORT LEWIS 3
Eager to keep the offensive production rolling, the Skyhawks jumped out with the early advantage thanks to a three-run top of the first inning. After the first two batters reached base, Alex Tenorio belted a double to drive in the pair. A strikeout and a fly ball put Highlands an out away from ending the threat, but Cara Daugherty would double down the left field line to plate Tenorio.

The Cowgirls responded with authority, scoring two in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the second for the 5-3 lead. New Mexico Highlands tallied seven of its 11 total hits in the first two innings while also leaving three runners stranded.

A trio of hits drove in a pair of insurance runs for the Cowgirls in the fourth inning followed by a single run thanks to a base on balls in the bottom of the fifth. After finding a hit in every frame prior, the Skyhawks were sat down in order across the final two innings. Amiee Shanks (13-6) was credited for the loss after throwing just 3.2 innings. NMHU's Maya Milano (6-12) earned the win after going the distance for the 13th time this season and allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits and one walk.

GAME TWO – NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS 2, FORT LEWIS 0
Labraida Tenorio (2-7) toed the rubber against the Cowgirls' Arianna Ramirez (8-12) for what would be a pitcher's duel. Tenorio and Ramirez exchanged a pair of shutdown innings to open the game, and the Skyhawks saw its first base runner in the second thanks to an error.

Putting just two runners on base across the first four frames, New Mexico Highlands finally broke the stalemate with what would become a two-run go-ahead fourth inning. Ramirez drew a walk for the Cowgirls' fourth base runner of the game, then Annika Ruiz, a freshman, smashed her first home run of the season for the lead.

All told, Tenorio allowed just the two earned runs on five hits and two walks while fanning three and taking the loss. NMHU's Ramirez allowed just three hits on the afternoon without recording a walk in her eighth win of the season.

TWO MORE TOMORROW
The Skyhawks and Cowgirls will play another pair of games tomorrow afternoon. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. MST on Brandt Field.
