Skyhawks go dutch, drop series to Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Even though the Skyhawks out-hit the Cowgirls 23-18 across the afternoon, the Fort Lewis College softball team was unable to score in key moments resulting in a day two split against New Mexico Highlands University. Fort Lewis won game one 9-6 while New Mexico Highlands captured the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series 3-1 with an 8-2 win in game two.

The Skyhawks fall to 20-21 overall and 18-16 in conference play. New Mexico Highlands advances to 17-26 overall and 13-22 in RMAC play capturing the second series win this season.

"Tough weekend for the Skyhawks but I have to tip my cap to Highlands," head coach Dwight Sanders shared. "They made plays, took away some hits, and their hitters put some good swings together. There are lots of things we can improve on from this weekend but there were also some positives. One of those being Ashley Burriel. We were missing a big piece to our lineup but she stepped in, made some plays, and hit the ball well."

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 9, NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS 6
Fort Lewis jumped out of the gates in game one, reaching base with the first two through the lineup and scoring with the following three. Alex Tenorio captured a one-run single, and Catheryn Rodman and Sabrina Carrillo each followed suit with a pair of sacrifice flys for a quick 3-0 lead.

New Mexico Highlands jumped on the board in the second, scoring a pair on a single and a sacrifice fly as well. The Skyhawks continued to tack on runs with a two-run third inning, plating the duo on a pair of singles from Tenorio and Cara Daugherty. Both sides would add a single run in the fourth, and the Skyhawks another in the sixth headed to the final frame.

In the top of the seventh, Rodman tripled following a lead-off walk for one run, and Carrillo singled the following at-bat to score the final run for FLC. In the bottom of the seventh, four-straight hits from the Cowgirls featuring a pair of doubles plated three runs before a pair of infielder's choices slammed the door shut on NMHU.

Amiee Shanks (14-6) earned the win by throwing her 13th complete game of the season. Shanks struck out just one while surrendering six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. Maya Milano (6-13) was dealt the loss after allowing nine runs, seven of which were earned, on 14 hits and one walk.

GAME TWO – NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS 8, FORT LEWIS 2
Fort Lewis managed to out-hit New Mexico Highlands 9-8 in game two but stranded nine runners on base to NMHU's eight. While the Cowgirls produced just three hits through the first two innings, a fielder's choice, four walks, and a hit-by-pitch allowed Highlands to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

A double from Sloan Shotton in the third inning pushed across the first run for FLC, and a lead-off home run from Rodman in the fourth would be the Skyhawks second and final run of the contest.

New Mexico Highlands pushed across a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Fort Lewis would only manage a single hit in the seventh. Fort Lewis' Caydee Farnworth (4-8) was credited for the loss. Arianna Ramirez (9-12) picked up the win for NMHU.

FINAL HOME TEST
Next weekend the Skyhawks are back home for the season's final home series. Fort Lewis will host Adams State University in a four-game conference series on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 22-23. The Skyhawks will host its inaugural spring Nike N7 game on Saturday.
