Tenorio throws no-hitter, Skyhawks rout Grizzlies in Saturday twin bill

DURANGO, Colo. – In an afternoon highlighted by offense firepower and dominant slugging, Labraida Tenorio stood above them all throwing a five-inning no-hitter in game two as the Fort Lewis College softball team downed Adams State University 10-6 and 9-0 in succession up on the Rim.

The Skyhawks captured the first two of a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series to move up to 22-21 overall and 20-16 in conference play. The Grizzlies dropped to 9-36 overall and 6-28 against RMAC opponents.

"Today was a special event with the debut of our spring Nike N7 games," head coach Dwight Sanders shared. "It was very powerful. Our girls used that and got behind it to bounce back. We hit the ball well, our pitchers were in command, and we had a few miscues on defense but thankfully they cleaned it up. It was just a really great day overall between N7 and getting to open our senior's final series at home with a pair of wins. I'm proud of the girls and how far they've come, especially bouncing back from a series that we think we shouldn't have dropped."

Tenorio, a freshman from Rio Rancho, N.M., has thrown the first no-hitter for the Skyhawks since Emily Morris at New Mexico Highlands University in 2019. It took Tenorio just 13 starts, 17 appearances, and 64.2 innings to accomplish the feat. True freshman Sabrina Carrillo had a monster afternoon at the plate for Fort Lewis. The El Paso, Texas, native went 5-for-6 on the afternoon with a home run, three doubles, four runs, and six runs batted in. All told, Carrillo was associated with 10 of Fort Lewis' 19 runs on the day.

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 10, ADAMS STATE 6
The weekend series opened in favor of the Grizzlies after Adams State jumped out to the early 2-0 lead. Adam State pushed across one run in the top of the second inning and another in the top of the fourth for the early edge. After seeing just one runner reach base through the first three frames, Fort Lewis finally exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning.

With two outs following a lead-off double from Sloan Shotton, Carrillo doubled to left center for the first run in favor of the blue and gold. A walk and a wild pitch later, first basemen Izzy Giroux belted a moonshot of a home run down the left field line to clear the bases and propel Fort Lewis into the 4-2 lead.

It was an ugly fifth frame for the Skyhawks as four defensive errors and three fielder's choices allowed the Grizzlies to plate four runs on just one hit to recapture the lead, 6-4. Back-to-back walks opened the bottom half of the fifth inning and Alex Tenorio took advantage, driving a double to left center to drive in a run and pull Fort Lewis back within one. In the next at-bat, it took Carrillo just three pitches before sending the fourth to dead center for a no-doubter three-run home run and the Skyhawks lead, 8-6.

Fort Lewis drove in a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a pair of errors, and Adams State would go down in order in the top of the seventh to seal the game. Amiee Shanks (15-6) captured the win with her 14th complete game of the season. Shanks allowed six runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits while striking out three. Shanks did not allow a base on balls for the eighth time this season. Adams State's Jade Garbiso (2-14) was credited for the loss tossing 5.2 innings and giving up six hits and one walk while striking out six.

GAME TWO – FORT LEWIS 9, ADAMS STATE 0
Fort Lewis flipped the script in game two, and the defensive success can be credited to Tenorio (3-7) in the circle. Tenorio struck out the side in order to open the first inning and continued to roll with a pair of strikeouts in the second inning as well. The Skyhawks picked up their pitcher in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs scored on a Giroux double and a single from Cara Daugherty.

The Skyhawks continued to put up crooked frames, plating another two runs in the bottom of the third on a double from Carrillo and a single up the middle from Kayla Stone. An inning later in the fourth, Fort Lewis continued its offensive showcase with another four runs scored on four hits and an error highlighted by a trio of singles from Daugherty, Alyssa Gutierrez, and Carrillo alongside a double from Ashley Burriel.

Tenorio charted 70 total pitches across her 5.0 innings of work. Adams State saw just four runners reach base in game two, all by way of a base on balls. Tenorio walked four separate Grizzlies while striking out six. Tayler Duncan (2-10) was credited for the loss after allowing seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out two. Neither Duncan nor reliever Danielle Hood (2-3) allowed a base on balls for Adams State.

TWO MORE
Tomorrow Fort Lewis and Adams State will play another doubleheader at Aspen Field. The Skyhawks will honor two graduating seniors, Sloan Shotton, and Katie Pippel, prior to tomorrow's 11:00 a.m. MST start time.
