Stone drives in six, Skyhawks offense downs Mountain Lions in a pair of Thursday tilts

DURANGO, Colo. -  The Skyhawks offense outhit the Mountain Lions 13-10 across the board while the defense allowed just a single run in each contest as the Fort Lewis College softball team defeated the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 4-1 and 9-1 respectively in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon on Aspen Field.

Fort Lewis soars up to 17-18 overall and 15-13 in RMAC play, extending its home winning streak to six-straight games. UCCS falls to 11-26 overall and 8-20 in conference games.

"I think we've reached a point in the season where the girls are starting to believe in what they can do," head coach Dwight Sanders shared. "I think they're starting to apply it on the field. Pitchers are settling in, bats are heating up, and we're not letting so many good pitches go by. I'm just proud of our girls today. There's a lot in front of them, but we're starting to heat up at a good time and I'm excited for what's ahead."

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 4, UCCS 1
After the Mountain Lions left a runner stranded in the top of the first, the Skyhawk felt they should respond accordingly. In the bottom of the frame, Alex Tenorio hit a two-out double to left center and Catheryn Rodman promptly drove her in for a 1-0 lead on a single to right field.

Kayla Stone tallied the second run of the ball game in the bottom of the second, scoring from first base on a double to left center from Cara Daugherty. UCCS finally jumped on the board in the top of the third, scoring Maddie Unrein – who reached base on a double to right center – on a single down the left field line from Courtnie Heller.

Following a pair of quiet innings from Fort Lewis, Rodman singled in the bottom of the fifth to plate a pair of insurance runs and extend the lead, 4-1. The Mountain Lions stranded three base runners across the final pair of innings but could not find any momentum offensively. Amiee Shanks (11-5) went the distance for the 11th time this season, earning the win while allowing a single run on six hits and four strikeouts. Additionally, Shanks made her fifth appearance this season without giving up a walk. UCCS' Autumn Kunze (4-4) was credited for the loss.

GAME TWO – FORT LEWIS 9, UCCS 1
Riding high on the fifth-straight win Fort Lewis decided the streak would not fall in game two, plating three runs for the early lead. After the Mountain Lions stranded a pair of runners in the top of the first, Stone doubled in the bottom half of the inning to drive in the trio with two outs.

UCCS pushed across its lone run of game two in the top of the second inning scoring Molly Sherwood, who led off the inning with a single, on a sacrifice fly from Kelsey Bell. Daugherty would respond with a sacrifice fly of her own to score a single run in the fourth. The Skyhawks finally broke it open in the fifth, plating a run on an error and tacking on three more from Stone's second, three-run double of the game.

In the sixth inning, all it took was a single at-bat to end the contest as freshmen Izzy Giroux sent a solo home run to dead-center – her third of the season – enacting the run rule and walking it off, 9-1. Caydee Farnworth (4-7) threw her fourth complete game of the season, surrendering just a single run on four hits, five walks, and five strikeouts. Braelyne Crenshaw (2-12) was dealt the loss after throwing just 4.0 innings and giving up seven earned runs on five hits and three walks alongside five strikeouts.

SEE YOU TOMORROW
