Skyhawks capture series, Grizzlies spoil senior day with 1-1 split

DURANGO, Colo. – With a game one victory by a score of 7-6, the Fort Lewis College softball team clinched the four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series over Adams State University. Unfortunately, the Skyhawks could not hold off the Grizzlies entirely and dropped the fourth and final game of the series 5-3 in the final game on Aspen Field this season.

The Skyhawks stand at 23-22 overall and 21-17 through its conference schedule. Adam State moves up to 10-37 on the season with a 7-29 RMAC mark. Fort Lewis finished the season 11-1 on Aspen Field. Sloan Shotton and Katie Pippel also played in their final home games for the blue and gold.

Cara Daugherty was near-perfect at the plate across both games, finishing the afternoon 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 7, ADAMS STATE 6
For the second time in as many days, Adams State was the first to strike in game one of the afternoon. The Grizzlies offense was more comfortable than on day one, scoring a single run from the second to fourth innings.

The Skyhawks jumped on the board in the bottom of the third inning, scoring a pair on a back-to-back triple and single from Alyssa Gutierrez and Shotton respectively. Fort Lewis duplicated the feat in the fourth, pushing across another pair of runs on a single from Daugherty and a sacrifice fly from Pippel.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the sixth, Pippel put the Skyhawks on the board once more with an RBI groundout to the first baseman. After a single from Gutierrez, Shotton belted a double to left center to clear the bases and extend the lead in favor of FLC, 7-3.

Adams State came knocking on the door in the top of the seventh, utilizing a fielder's choice and an error to plate a run. A single added on another, and with runners on first and third Daugherty left her feet to catch a sinking line drive in left field and save at least one run from scoring. Amiee Shanks (16-6) forced a pop fly to end the game, securing her 16th win and 15th complete game this season. Shanks gave up six runs, only three of which were earned, on three walks and a season-high 13 hits.

GAME TWO – FORT LEWIS 3, ADAMS STATE 5
Labraida Tenorio (3-7) toed the rubber against Adam State's Tayler Duncan (3-10) for the second-straight day and the duo provided a pitcher's duel for much of the ball game. The Skyhawks were able to score first with Tenorio on the bump, pushing across a single run in the second and third frames.

The Grizzlies matched Fort Lewis with a single run in the third, and with empty frames in the fourth, the final game headed to the fifth with a 2-1 advantage to the blue and gold. In the top of the fifth, Adam State's Belinda Vargas – who was 0-for-3 in game two and 1-for-7 across the afternoon – finally got Tenorio's number and hit a two-run home run to center field recapturing the lead, 3-2.

Fort Lewis would tie the ball game with a lone run in the bottom of the fifth, but an untimely error by the Skyhawks with the bases loaded in the sixth gave the Grizzlies the final lead change of the afternoon and ultimately, the 5-3 victory to avoid the sweep.

Fort Lewis' Caydee Farnworth (4-9) was credited for the loss after entering a tie ball game in the fifth inning and surrendering the final two runs across 2.0 innings of work alongside two hits. Duncan earned the win after her offense bailed her out in the top of the fifth, while Danielle Hood (2-3) notched the Grizzlies' first save of the season thanks to 2.0 innings of no-hit relief.

REGULAR SEASON FINALE
Next weekend the Skyhawks are headed to Lakewood, Colo., for the final four-game RMAC series at Colorado Christian University. The Skyhawks and 9th-ranked Cougars will face off on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 28-29 at All Star Park.
