Skyhawks push it to extras, narrowly drop a pair to No. 9 Cougars

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – After snapping perfection away in game one, the Fort Lewis College softball team nearly did what just few teams have done before. But after pushing game two to nine innings the Skyhawks ultimately came up short, falling to ninth-ranked Colorado Christian University by scores of 3-0 and 5-4 on a Sunny afternoon at All Star Park.

The Cougars move up to 50-4 overall and 40-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play and take a 2-0 lead in the four-game conference series. Fort Lewis slides down to 23-24 overall and 21-19 against conference opponents.

GAME ONE – COLORADO CHRISTIAN 3, FORT LEWIS 0
Amiee Shanks (16-7) toed the rubber against conference-leader and Colorado Christian's own Kali Crandall (25-2) and the duo provided a pitcher's duel through and through. Shanks kept a quality sheet throughout the contest, scattering all eight of the Cougars' hits across five of her six frames pitched featuring a clean third inning.

Ranked ninth nationally, it was only a matter of time before the Cougars would strike. Leah Garcia drew a walk in the second at-bat in the second inning, and it was Logan Menzies who took advantage with a two-run home run for the first score of the game. Menzies struck once more in the fourth inning, hitting a solo home run for added insurance. All told, Menzies was one of just two Cougars to record two hits and was responsible for all three runs in the contest.

Crandall was on cruise control all afternoon, maintaining a perfect game heading into the seventh and final inning. After striking out back-to-back Skyhawks to open the frame – and eclipsing 200 strikeouts on the season – Alex Tenorio forced a fielding error by the shortstop for the first runner of the ball game. Crandall would still finish the afternoon with a no-hitter and her 19th complete game of the season.

GAME TWO – COLORADO CHRISTIAN 5, FORT LEWIS 4
The long ball reigned supreme once more in game two, but Fort Lewis would not falter the second go-around. Kayla Middleton hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning for the quick score and her sister, Kenzie Middleton, topped her in the fifth inning with a two-run shot of her own.

While Ashley Burriel secured the Skyhawks first hit of the afternoon in the third inning, Sloan Shotton provided the first run of the day for the blue and gold with a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and the first two runners aboard in the top of the seventh, Cara Daugherty tripled to left field to tie the game. Moments later, a wild pitch kicked to the backstop allowing Daugherty to slide in for the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the seventh, a pair of singles allowed Colorado Christian to tie the game and force extra innings. Both sides exchanged clean sheets in the eighth, but small ball for the Cougars proved the difference-maker after back-to-back bunts brought in the game-winning run.

Caydee Farnworth (4-10) was credited for the loss after throwing all 8.0 innings and holding the ninth-ranked Cougars to just four earned runs on 11 hits and four walks while striking out four as well. Abrie Castillo (18-2) threw the first 7.0 innings of game two, but after allowing the Skyhawks to tie the game, Colorado Christian went to its bullpen to bring Crandall back out. Crandall earned the win after two flawless innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts.

ANOTHER PAIR TOMORROW
Fort Lewis and Colorado Christian still have two games to go in the conference series and are set to play the pair tomorrow morning at All Star Park. The Skyhawks and Cougars will have an 11:00 a.m. start time.
