Shanks notches a pair of wins, Skyhawks sweep Mountain Lions

DURANGO, Colo. – Sophomore Amiee Shanks was lights out in the circle this afternoon, guiding the Fort Lewis College softball team to a pair 6-0 and 6-4 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wins over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and extending the Skyhawks winning streak to eight-straight games with back-to-back sweeps over opponents on Aspen Field.

The Skyhawks advance to 19-18 overall and 17-13 in RMAC play, securing an overall winning record mid-season for the first time since 2014. UCCS drops to 11-28 overall and 8-22 against conference foes. Additionally, Fort Lewis sweeps Colorado Springs for just the second time in program history since 2001.

"This week was another example for our girls of their ability to dominate," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Dwight Sanders shared. "We were loud in the dugout, executed on the base paths, made big plays, and hit the ball hard. It's a great look into what we're building, our girls just don't quit. This team is catching fire right when it counts."

GAME ONE – FORT LEWIS 6, UCCS 0
Fort Lewis jumped on the Mountain Lions early in game one, pushing across a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a throwing error caused by Alyssa Gutierrez stealing third base, and a single from Alex Tenorio the following at-bat.

The Skyhawks scored in nearly every inning, pushing across a single run in the third and fourth innings alongside a pair in the fifth. While held scoreless in the second and sixth innings, FLC had its share of opportunities leaving four runners stranded between the two frames.

Shanks (13-5) was nearly unstoppable in the early game, holding UCCS to just four base runners across the game by way of three hits and a walk, each from a different Mountain Lion. While striking out just three, Shanks needed only 85 total pitches to earn her 12th win and complete game of the year. Braelyne Crenshaw (2-13) took the loss and threw just 4.2 innings while surrendering six runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits and two walks.

GAME TWO – FORT LEWIS 6, UCCS 4
Colorado Springs was ready to flip the script in game two, holding the Skyhawks scoreless in the first inning for the first time this series. The Mountain Lions even struck first, plating two runs in the top of the second inning on a two-run homer from Cassidy Hubner, her second of the season.

Trailing for the first time this series the Skyhawks responded promptly, pushing across a single run in the bottom of the inning by way of a Mountain Lions error. To UCCS's favor, an error by the Skyhawks the following inning allowed the Mountain Lions to re-extend the lead, 3-1.

For the third time in two days, Kayla Stone stepped to the plate with a pair of runners on base and scorched a double off of the left field fence to tie the game. While going scoreless through the fourth inning, Fort Lewis finally captured its first lead in game two with a single from Stone to score Catheryn Rodman in the bottom of the fifth.

Entering the tied ball game in the top of the fifth, Shanks sat down Colorado Springs in order to roll through the fifth and sixth innings. Fort Lewis pushed across a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 6-3 lead heading to the seventh with just three outs remaining. The Mountain Lions managed to push across a single run in the seventh, but Shanks drew the final fly ball to right field to end the game and capture her second win of the afternoon. In 3.0 innings of relief, Shanks allowed just a single earned run on three hits without a single walk or strikeout. Autumn Kunze (4-5) was credited for the loss for UCCS.

HEADED SOUTH
The Skyhawks have concluded its eight-game home stand and will continue its season on the road next weekend. Heading to Las Vegas, New Mexico, Fort Lewis will head into New Mexico Highlands University and the home of the Cowgirls for another four-game RMAC series on Apr. 15-16.
