9/10/2023 11:11:00 AM

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's and women's cross country teams began the season on Saturday at the historic Joe Vigil Invite, picking up right where they left off in 2022 with personal bests across the board.

The men's 8k run at the Cattails Golf Course featured 50 collegiate athletes while the women's 5k saw 34 participants toe the line.

Men's Results
Junior Brady Burrough led the team with a time of 25:34.38 to place 15th in the loaded field and establish a new personal best. The next three finishers were Skyler McIntyre (29th, 26:29.77), Malakai Hanson (32nd, 26:47.04), and Aaron Busche (33rd, 26:52.70).

Additional finishers for the Skyhawks

"The men's team that traveled opened up the year looking great. We had personal bests for almost every runner," said head coach Shawn Jakubowski. "Brady ran a fantastic race and will line up next week with the others at Western. He keeps improving each week and moving his way up the roster."

Women's Results
Freshmen showed up to make a name for themselves in the 5k, including Linda Weigang who led the Skyhawks with a 13th place finish. Weigang ran for a time of 18:01.95—the fourth fastest 5k time in Fort Lewis cross country history. The duo of Madelaine Jellison (19:45.28) and Clare Castleberry (19:45.88) followed in 21st and 22nd place, respectively.

Additional finishers for the Skyhawks

"The women set a ton of PR's on Saturday, our top three were all freshmen and they ran like veterans," recognized Jakubowski. "This meet showed the depth of both squads, and next week should tell us a lot more as we head to Western."

Up Next
Fort Lewis will bring both teams to Gunnison next week for the 15th annual Mountaineer/Cowboy Invite on Saturday, September 16. The men's 8k begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by the women's 5k at 10:45 a.m.
