Red Leafs elude Skyhawks in Burnaby

BURNABY, B.C. – The Skyhawks out-shot the Red Leafs in every category, but a single defensive miscalculation in the box allowed Simon Fraser University to grab a 1-0 lead and never look back, felling the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team in its road debut at SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field Thursday evening.

The Skyhawks fall to an even 2-2 overall this season while the Red Leafs move up to 3-2 and snap a two-game losing streak.

Fort Lewis was in command early, but the Skyhawks struggled to keep shots between the frame targeting an even pair on-goal identical to the Red Leafs. Both sides took three corner kicks in the first half.

In the 14th minute, Simon Fraser took a throw-in from 20 yards up the left side, and an open lane allowed for service into the box. Koji Poon took to his left just above the penalty line, but after his first move was blocked, Poon spun to his left and used his right foot to find the top right corner and net and what would stand to be the game-winning goal.

FLC burst out of the intermission to challenge senior goalkeeper Justyn Sandhu with five shots-on-goal among nine total across the final half. Sandhu was perfect in goal making seven saves for his second clean sheet of the season.

All told, Fort Lewis led Simon Fraser 16 shots to 11 and seven shots between the posts to the Red Leafs' five. SFU held the advantage in corner kicks seven to four and fouls eight to 14.

Loic Jean-Baptiste led FLC with four total shots while Gabriel Legendre was the only Skyhawk to place two or more on goal. Niko Papakyriakopoulos led the Red Leafs with three shots, all on goal, while Poon scored on his only shot of the night.
