Skyhawks welcome Grizzlies for inaugural Nike N7 match, meet Roadrunners in Denver to close out non-conference schedule

9/21/2023 11:00:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – Following an unfavorable road trip to Burnaby, British Columbia, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team will look to bounce back and regain momentum before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule begins next week. The Skyhawks will take on Adams State University at home this Friday for the program's inaugural Nike N7 match at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Denver, Colo., for a matchup with the Roadrunners at Metropolitan State University of Denver on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Nike N7
Since its creation in 2009, the Nike N7 Fund has awarded more than $8 million in grants to 270 Native American and Aboriginal communities and organizations, reaching more than 500,000 youths. The N7 Fund supports organizations that provide more equal, inclusive, and active communities. Fort Lewis College is honored to be one of just 11 institutions nationwide selected to participate in this program.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks came home from Canada empty-handed after being dealt a 0-1 loss by Simon Fraser University. A defensive miscue in the 15th minute allowed the Red Leafs to grab the lead and hold out for the win. Montana State University Billings grabbed a 1-0 advantage on a similar strike from just outside the box in the 11th minute, but this time Anton Hjalmarsson was able to equalize with a tap-in at the left post after a service pass from Ciaran Feeney into the box evaded nearly a dozen players.

Hot Start
Fort Lewis boasts one of the strongest offenses in the conference by the numbers. The Skyhawks rank third in goals per game with 1.6 behind only MSU Denver (2.5) and third-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo (3.0). FLC also ranks second in total shots (82) and shots per game (16.4). Individually, Fort Lewis owns three of the conference's top-ten goal scorers. Gabriel Legendre sits in fourth with three goals while Hjalmarsson and Emmett Layman take the ninth and ten spots with two each.

Scouting Adams State
The Grizzlies find themselves at 0-4 to start the season after four games against the Lone Star Conference. Lubbock Christian University, who downed FLC 3-2, escaped the Grizzlies with just a 1-0 decision. Adams State's lone goal of the season, scored by Emmanuel Kolleh, came in the Grizzlies 4-1 season-opening loss to Eastern New Mexico. Freshman Tyler Zimbounellis was credited with the lone assist while Ranulfo Lopez, who tallied three goals and three assists last season, leads Adams State with five total shots.

Scouting MSU Denver
MSU Denver stands at 1-3-2 overall after playing a plethora of opponents from across four NCAA Division II conferences. The Roadrunners have emerged victorious just once this season after a commanding 9-0 rout over St. Cloud State University. MSUD fought to a draw against Lubbock Christian and California State University, Monterey Bay. 10 different Roadrunners have scored goals this season but none more than junior Aaron Biggerstaff with four total and an assist. Graduate student Ross Miller stands in goal for this third-straight season. Miller has allowed 14 goals while making 20 saves against 59 shots faced thus far.
