Volleyball to play a home and away split, hosts Mountaineers on Tuesday

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball returns to Whalen Gymnasium for a Tuesday match against Western Colorado University, followed by a road match on Friday versus New Mexico Highlands.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis played to a weekend split with a win over Black Hills State and a loss to South Dakota Mines. In the win over the Yellow Jackets, sophomore Jordan DeJesus led the team with 16 kills on 35 swings (.343), followed by senior Alexis Hobie who had 12 kills. The trio of JJ Curry, Lauren Shea, and Ella Butler each totaled 10 kills. Shea had a double-double with a team-high 14 digs, followed by freshman Emery Pomroy who came away with 13. Senior Natalia Lambos coordinated the balanced offense and collected 49 assists to go along with 12 digs.

The following night against South Dakota Mines, the Skyhawks hit .169 for the match compared to a .242 efficiency for the Hardrockers. South Dakota Mines benefited from 14 blocks and five aces while earning 67 digs. Fort Lewis had 47 kills and 58 digs. Senior Alexis Hobie led the team with 13 kills, followed by sophomore Jordan DeJesus who had 12. Fifth-year Lauren Shea picked up a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Senior Natalia Lambos tied for the team lead with 13 digs and 36 assists.

Scouting Western Colorado
The Mountaineers are 5-11 overall and 2-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play following 3-1 win over Black Hills State last week. The team holds additional conference wins over Chadron State (3-0) and Westminster University (3-2). They are 2-4 on the road.

As a team, Western Colorado is hitting .180 compared to a .215 clip for their opponents. They average 16.2 digs per set and 1.3 blocks per set. Their opponents have averaged 2.5 blocks per set. Maggie Olson is leading the team with 3.86 kills per set, followed by four players with over two kills per set. Despite leading the team, Olson has not appeared in a match since early September and does not appear on the team's roster. Nur Turkmenoglu coordinates the balanced offense and averages 9.29 assists per set. Chinaru Inoue leads the backcourt with 4.56 digs per set and a .951 receiving efficiency.

Fort Lewis narrowly trails the all-time series, 21-24. The Skyhawks have won the last two meetings and are 11-10 when playing at home. In last year's home sweep of the Mountaineers, the Skyhawks hit .276 and were led by Hobie's 11 kills.

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
The Cowgirls are 4-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play. They hold a 1-6 road record and earned a split last week. First, NMHU topped Colorado School of Mines in five sets before falling to No. 2 MSU Denver in three.

As a team, NMHU is hitting .109 while allowing a .230 efficiency from its opponents. They are statistically outplayed in all major categories. Angelina Burton leads the team with 2.37 kills per set, followed by four players who average over one kill per set. Abby Carlsen is the primary setter in an offense that has used three throughout the year, averaging 5.19 assists per set. Sophia Hendricks-Montes is the top defender at 4.65 digs per set but has not played since mid-September.

Fort Lewis faced NMHU in a regional pod match just two weeks ago and earned a 3-1 win on the road. Sophomore Alina Nunez led the team with 12 kills and 14 digs in the win. The Skyhawks lead the all-time series 32-24 and are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

Around the RMAC
The conference has two teams ranked in the AVCA/TERAFLEX DII Poll and one program receiving votes. MSU Denver maintained its No. 2 position and is now receiving one first place vote. Colorado Mesa has moved up two spots to No. 16.

MSU Denver holds the top spot in the conference standings with a 5-0 record, followed by Colroado Mesa and Regis at 5-1. Fort Lewis is 11th with a 2-4 record. The Skyhawks rank 14th in hitting percentage (.150), 7th in assists (11.40), 8th in kills (12.54), 13th in blocks (1.56), 9th in digs (15.12), and 11th in aces (1.30).

Natalia Lambos ranks 6th in the conference ranks with 9.11 assists per set. Emery Pomroy leads the Skyhawks in digs per set and ranks 13th in the conference at 3.34. Ella Butler ranks 10th in aces per set at .37.

The Skyhawks have three home matches during Homecoming Week, starting with the annual Nike N7 game versus Adams State University on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:00 p.m. They will then face Regis University on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and UCCS on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
