Skyhawks climb three spots in final round to earn tenth at Otter Invitational

10/15/2024 5:51:00 PM

DURANGO, Colo. – After unfortunate weather in the area suspended play halfway through the tournament's second round last night, the Fort Lewis men's golf team used the combination of rest and a new day to full advantage to cut down twelve strokes en route to a tenth-place finish at the Otter Invitational at Bayonet Black Horse.

The Skyhawks climbed into fifth place in round one on the strength of a 296 (+8) team total, but inclement weather set in and forced FLC into a 24-over 312 in round two that was split between last night and this morning. In the final round, however, the team managed to bounce back and post its best-combined score for the tournament with a 291 (+3).

Cal State East Bay, who received votes on the latest Bushnell/Golfweek DII Coaches Poll, held on to a three-stroke lead to claim team medalist honors on the strength of an 868 (+4) team score. It was Santa Clara University's Jack Hayden, who competed as one of 13 unattached individuals, who won the tournament and brought home his first career medalist honor with an impressive five-under-par 211.

Traejan Andrews led the Skyhawks with his fourth-straight top-25 finish as the junior carded scores of 74 (+2), 78 (+6), and 70 (-2) for a 222 (+6) total and a tie for 25th. Tyler Tyson trailed Andrews in a tie for 34th with a nine-over-par 225.

Despite first and third-round scores of 71 (-1) and 76 (+4), Jackson Rottscahfer ultimately fell into a tie for 49th thanks to an 81 (+9) in round two. Rounding out the Skyhawks roster were Jordan Jennings (230, +14) and Carson Kerr (232, +16) who registered ties for 58th and 70th, respectively.
