Nunez leads volleyball to sweep of Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Paced by a 13-kill performance by sophomore Alina Nunez, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team earned its second win over New Mexico Highlands in as many weeks, this one counting toward Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.

With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 7-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play while the Cowgirls dropped to 4-13 on the year and 2-5 in the league.

Fort Lewis hit .149 and limited NMHU to a .092 efficiency. The Skyhawks held an advantage in all statistical categories with the exception of blocks where the Cowgirls held a 6-4 advantage. Nunez led the team and tied for the match lead with 13 kills, followed by senior Alexis Hobie who chipped in 10. Senior Natalia Lambos coordinated the offense and totaled 27 assists to go along with six digs and three blocks. Freshman Emery Pomroy led all players with 12 digs.

Nunez and Ella Butler each put away two kills early in the first set to create a commanding lead, and it eventually extended to 10-4 after a kill by Hobie found the deep corner. The Skyhawks held on to the lead thanks to a handful of miscues by the Cowgirls and forced a timeout at 15-8. NMHU returned a block out of the break, followed by an ace to reach double figures. Fort Lewis scored the next three points behind kills from JJ Curry and Hobie, but the Cowgirls went on a scoring run to trail by three. The run continued out of a Fort Lewis timeout, and NMHU claimed the lead after a touch call on a ball that appeared to sail long. The Skyhawks extended the set with two points to tie the score at 24-24 and eventually found set point with a kill from Butler. A long swing on the right side by NMHU ended the set in a 27-25 score.

The teams were knotted up six times before either side reached the 10-point mark, but Hobie snapped down back-to-back kills to give her team a 10-7 lead. Fort Lewis extended the lead to five points off a slide by Butler to bring on a timeout for the Cowgirls. Hobie continued her hot streak out of the intermission and put away three more kills to make it a 19-13 Skyhawks lead. Curry got the team to 20 points with her fourth kill of the match, and an ensuing NMHU error forced another timeout. Kills and attacking errors were exchanged before Butler got Fort Lewis to set point with a kill. The Cowgirls' fourth attacking error of the set gave Fort Lewis a 2-0 match lead.

The Cowgirls built a four-point lead in the third set, but Fort Lewis chipped away at it. The Skyhawks went on to take the lead, building it to 10-7 with an ace by Butler to force a timeout. Fort Lewis added three more points out of the break before an error allowed for a side out. Another scoring surge had the Skyhawks ahead by seven after a Nunez kill, and a block from Butler and Lambos had it 22-14 moments later. The Cowgirls ended the set with a pair of errors, and Nunez put the nail in the coffin with her 13th kill of the match.

The Skyhawks (7-11, 3-5 RMAC) have three home matches during Homecoming Week, starting with the annual Nike N7 game versus Adams State University on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:00 p.m. They will then face Regis University on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and UCCS on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
